I started reading the work to spot any errors or typos not found by the se lint, meanwhile I found a painting that seems appropriate:

Song of the Waters.

If this painting is considered inappropriate, Heart of the Andes or An Old Clearing also seem good.

The story involves a man dreaming about the life of one of his hominid ancestors, so a painting depicting native americans may be in bad taste. The painting "Heart of the Andes" also can't be used, since it is one pixel short in height. The painting "An Old Clearing" gives a good cover, in my opinion:

Whether you want to use it is of course up to you, but that is no hindrance at all. Every cover we have is resized, many (most?) of them upward, and some of them by quite a lot (often rescued by Gigapixel or some other uprezzer).

I didn't look at the text files because I thought all files in PG had the same information. Will not make this mistake in the future. I believe all the issues in the repo are fixed. Waiting for confirmation on whether or not I add the map.

I’d say that we’d probably want that map, yes. Though I guess we’d want to flip it so that north is up, and join the two pages together? You don’t see a full two-page spread on an eink device typically.

We’d want to convert the scans to SVGs. I usually use Inkscape to trace the bitmap, then tidy the SVGs manually afterwards. We’ll need a description, LoI file, etc. You can look at Beatrix Potter for a bunch of examples.

Added the transcribers to the colophon. I notices that the in the html version of the PG book, the release date is 2008, while in the plain text is 1995; which one should I use? (I put 1995).

I also couldn't find a high resolution of the map, should I try to use the one posted in here? How can I be sure that the map is in the public domain?

On the subject of release dates, you’d use the original publishing date of the novel, not the transcription.

For the map scans, archive.org provides a “ SINGLE PAGE PROCESSED JP2 ZIP” option that’ll contain the best scans. If cutting this together and assembling an SVG feels super daunting then I’m happy to help out with the image production process. Otherwise I can provide instructions on how to do it. Your call 🙂

I’d basically work in this order:

1. Find the best quality scans you can on archive.org
2. Take the two pages with the map on, join them together so that the map looks like it’s printed on one page, and rotate 90º
3. Save that out as a PNG to the images folder
4. Download Inkscape (there are alternatives, but this is free and my favourite)
5. Drag the PNG into an empty Inkscape document
6. Trace the PNG with Path / Trace Bitmap. You might need to play around with the controls to get good results
7. Select the PNG (by clicking on the white border) and delete it. You should be left with just a path.
8. There’s one more annoying step to do in Inkscape: by default there’ll be transforms in place that we don’t want. Easiest way to get rid of them is to open the XML editor (Edit / XML Editor) then drag the svg:path element to above the svg:g element. This will get rid of the transform. You can then delete the svg:g element.
9. The traced path will now be misaligned to the viewport, but you can resize the canvas to fit the path by clicking on the path then Edit / Resize Page to Selection
10. Save the file to src/epub/images
11. Finally, you need to remove a bunch of excess stuff that Inkscape has left. Typically I’d take a backup copy of your file that you can restore to, then run it through SVGOMG. You may need to massage it a little more, but you’re aiming for code that looks like this image from Beatrix Potter: an svg root element with a viewbox, a title that describes the image, and a path.

After that there’s some additional stuff to do with getting an LoI in place, but that can come afterwards.

I managed to make a semi-decent .svg file (somehow), but I'm confused about the viewBox attribute. Opening the file in VSCode shows height and width attributes, what is the proper action to make it correct? Also, if no work is required in the .svg is needed, what should I do insert the image and create the Loi? The manual of style wasn't very clear to me.

I opened your attached SVG in a text editor and I don't see any height
or width attributes. It looks basically fine to me. Lint will raise a
few issues about your image which should be easy to correct:

- Image dimensions are too large, should be smaller than 4M px square.
For SVGs 1000x1000 can be the max, this is because they're rendered to
PNG for the compatible epub.

- Missing <title>

- Illegal style="fill..."

Good job! It’s almost there, you’ll need to just add the correct xmlns:svg attribute to the SVG and the XML header. Check the Beatrix Potter link again. Oh, and you can remove the style attribute from the path, it’s not needed.

Once you’ve done that then you’ll need to write a title attribute that describes the map. Think what sort of things a person describing the map to you would say. I guess 4-5 sentences would cover all that information?

I think the code of the loi, map xhtml and content.opf is correct, but I couldn't find how to properly resize the .svg file. I put the viewBox attribute to the max values allowed, but now it just shows a part of the map. How do I proceed to resize the svg path?

The viewbox is basically just stipulating which part of the bigger image should be visible. To resize the path, the easiest way would probably be to:

1. Take a copy of your SVG and open in Inkscape
2. Click on the path and use the drag handle to resize the path to something quite a lot smaller. If you hold Ctrl while resizing it retains the aspect ratio.
3. Edit / Resize Page to Selection.
4. Save your copy. That copy will have a resized path, and the correct viewBox attribute in it. You can copy those back into your original SVG and check.

I'll managed to resize the map and it shows fine on my kindle. However it seems to be an empty page between the epigraph and the map, and the reason is not clear to me, can someone point me to the problem? Other than that, it should be up for review.

As long as your CSS/HTML is fine that's all that matters. Kindle is not
a good renderer.
