Dear friends,

All of you who are still in service do consider your options to beat the recession period. 2014 is going to be no good time.

Consider a very rational picture of the job scenario on your net worth with matching your skill set into the industry you will be aspiring to join. We tend to waste a lot of time and effort flowing into emotions and comparative statistics of what our friends have got in placements. We are fortunate that we have been treated equal in all respects in the armed forces in the past 10+ years. But this rationality will just pop in the corporate and one must not be blind to this fact.

I have tried to mentor some of my juniors and peers when i had the opportunity to make them aware of these facts.

If you are still in service and eventually will kick the seat in a year or so, consider doing the following.

1. Draw up your skill set being a self critique. Do not vaguely say you know doing something. It is always better to say "do i know it (contract management say for example) completely, so that i may perform all tasks related efficiently?"

2. Research sufficiently on a/few desired sector(s) you aspire to work for. Do not wait for the PRC time to decide upon this. you never will have time for this.

3. Prepare a realistic and understandable resume in the language the HR manager can understand. Most specifically you may  have to fine tune your resume to each job you may want to apply. Maximum size must be 2 sides of an A4 sheet.

4. Upgrade your skills and aim at "domain knowledge expert" for the chosen sector(s).

5. Decide on the exit date in a calculated manner considering the global scenario (if you still had +2 years of engagement left). There are many articles and analysis available in the open domain and a good reading will help you to make informed decisions.

6. Network, Network and Network. Only this way you will land in a desired job. The paid hiring services in the market (a.k.a Naukri.com etc) do not understand what you are worth and will not be able to fit you in roles appropriate to your caliber. Unfortunately you need to do that yourself.

7. Create your public professional presence and be active on that. Your course mates already in the industry can help keep them in contact and understand whats going on in their sector.

I have now almost spent an year after retirement. Its a very exiting place out of the confines of the armed forces and the duties you performed. You will enjoy if you only planned your exit and entry. Just believe in self as we are all a different breed who can outperform.

Larger corporate and employable sectors who can match your exit pay packages are directly or indirectly linked to business and cash inflow from the American economy.

For some reading.

Note : Rajarajan we need your posts to keep this group active !!!!

Dear Pawan,

Many thanks for the insights on the subject. This surely will help our friends in uniform to plan the road map to exit out of the whites with grace and elan.

One submission, though the markets are gloomy, one must seek other options such as PSUs, Govt jobs as they do in some sense match up to the Naval salaries, perks etc.

And lastly, they must keep faith in themselves and their calibre. Our fraternity of people are much better than sister service, better informed and equipped. Do, keep a positive outlook.

Dear Friends,

Its all about your priorities and outlook towards your being. I mean to say you choose your way of life and that suits your and your social needs. We are very fortunate that we can take help from our peers in different work sectors.

Sunil has very aptly brought out the lucrative Govt/Public sector jobs which will assure you a well balanced social and well secured personal life. We are not new to being in such as system. The transition now must be well planned to enter these sectors. If one is aiming for the IAS/IPS we have to pass the hurdle of the entrance exams for the same. I would request if Sunil may put down certain guidelines for our friends in service or otherwise, so that one may think and work upon the plan. This way we will use this group to benefit.

A path of difficulties but will definitely reap fruits with hard work, dedication and focussed efforts. There are very glaring uncertainties in the world of entrepreneurship. But we definitely can beat the odds.

Ravi can you please guide us on avenues to be an entrepreneur. I personally feel you need a lot of money to start your own venture, is it true or is there any other way out to that. Definitely as you rightly said working and creating jobs is very exiting. Some tips on the same will be very helpful.

I found a few notes for a reality check on entrepreneurship, they go as follows;

12 reasons why I choose to be an entrepreneur

1. I hate sleeping.

2. I have enjoyed my life in childhood.

3. I can't Live without Tension.

4. I wanted 2 have a disturbed life.

5. I believe in Geeta "karm karo fal ki chinta mat karo".

6. I wanted 2 take revenge on myself.

7. I love dreaming about, delivery, payments, instead of Angelina Jolie…

8. I wanted social boycott.

9. I wanted a break up from most of my friends because I have too many of them.

10. I love 2 work on holidays.

11. I cant live without mobile hooked on my ears even in the bathroom .

12. I love begging for payments…???

Pawan

Dear All,

CHILL!! All of you guys have been groomed to survive. Many of us may make it big, but essentiallly all of us will survive. So dont get overstressed and overworked. Think straight, deflate your egos and be realistic. I dont know a single officer who has not been able to earn his living. Dreams and aspirations are a separate issue!

Enterpeneurs are a separate breed. It is like comparing a CA and an MBA graduate. Though they deal in finance the thought process is different. While thought process highlighted here magnifies the hardships sucess stories are numerous. I wish Ravi SUCESS at its very best. Make it big for for all of us.

"I wish all my course mates who have left service a happy anniversary for our first year out of service"

Best Regards,
Joe Paul M

Hey Friends,

Been reading these updates and snippets from our colleagues and was wondering that is it not that this group includes our mates from 2002 batch and if so then almost all if us who have been released have already spent an year outside and have picked up some steam of his desire and place for rest if his life ...anyways adding a facet from this side of land I can add following :

Career in International market is challenging. Our tangibles carry very less value (barring gulf) and our intangibles and our transferable skills that we have inculcated in service is our path of success and that's what we have use to  market ourselves .

Having spent around 6 months out of Navy and having gains my foothold in international market I would suggest some insights on resume for those who are interested in opportunities abroad. Don't make your résumé expansive and general, here the resumes are to match the job description, so be only job specific that you are applying for. Don't be general. Nobody wants general managers abroad as freshers. Show experience related to subject matter only companies prefer vertical specialists. Ideally keep it two pages and can in no condition exceed three or else it will be dumped. Resumes in large corp orates are read by computers with lot of filters and get thrashed if not matching job descriptions, so be precise and brief. Be prompt and immediate, there are lot of experienced people in the market and competition is cut throat. But i dont believe that this will help us in big way, as for us Networking is the best way to move ahead if we are looking for higher positions. Market here is very conservative and network based. Getting a right break is very difficult but the quality of life is unmatched.

I also agree with what Ravi has indicated as Officers of Military service we are also fitted to get into something of our own, as we have all the necessary basic attributes of an entrepreneur. Our out look in defence was always bigger and larger and our disciplined life is a great advantage to succeed in business. Finally when we joined services we took a path not threaded by anyone in family, we chose a non conventional life and hence we can once again choose a path not taken by anyone close and still succeed.

I am here in Melbourne, Australia and will certainly update and share my experience here and am also open for any strategic propositions that anyone has for offer.

Regards
Sandy.

Dear All

I have been reading your valuable views and was wondering two things
(a) Have we started working what we really want or just we are continuing the rat race to earn money...
(b) Are we working for self or someone else..

Well the same question applies to me also.

I can only pray that we all find simplicity & peace in our doings. "The professor's coffee cups story" hold good in this regards...

Hope we all find what we all were looking for after leaving service...

Regards
