Can someone explain to me why messages on my iPad are not synched with my iphone? They operate like two separate apps. Virginia

Hello Virginia,

On your iPhone, go to Settings > Messages > Text Message Forwarding and switch it on for those devices that you wish to have in sync with your iPhone. 😃

Think that isn’t a Settings option with most recent versions of iOS? Make sure that you have Send & Receive in Message Settings on all devices to Use Apple ID is the way to get messages synched to both iPhone and iPad.

The logic is that on the iPhone the identifier is by default the mobile phone number. The iPad won’t know what that is, hence the need to use the Apple ID. Especially important if the iPad has a SIM card as it will have its own mobile number!

There’s also iCloud Messages in iCloud settings on both iPad and iPhone, that should sync old messages and deletions

Thanks, very helpful.  That should sort it. (Too hot here at the moment to do anything technical.)

Those settings came from my iPhone running iOS 15 and I’m sure flipping that switch is all I did when I was in the same situation as Virginia. There may well be some others too ..
