Hi Smuggers. Can somebody who uses Word for Mac advise me?I cannot see how to get rid of chunks of white space between paragraphs. Not all paragraphs but on some pages there is a large white space between paragraphs for no rhyme or reason. Using back space does not get rid of it. It must be formatting of some sort but I cannot see how to alter that. Advice would be much appreciated. Virginia

Try selecting the paragraph go to the Format menu > Paragraph > look in the Spacing section > check if any space has been added before or after that paragraph.

Thanks for your reply, Sam.  Unfortunately, your suggestion didn’t work.  I’m using Word for Mac to be able read my editor’s comments on my book.  But I find it incredibly clunky.  Is this me?  I can’t highlight anything (it will let me select but I can’t see what I have selected), I can’t get rid of white space between paragraphs, I cannot get rid of a underlining in one whole paragraph.  I may just ignore these irritations and wait until my grandson comes to visit weekend after next.  But if I could sort it before, I would be very relieved.

Personally I find Word awful and always open Word documents in Pages. But when collaborating it can be awkward. What did you send it as originally, if not Word? You could open the original and read the comments in Pages, and edit the original?

My guess would be that the offending paras have been formatted with thick
white rules either above or below. I've seen this problem before.

Thanks for your replies. I’m beginning to realise that the problem is caused not by Word itself but by the editing mode. Somehow I have got to discover a way of adding to, changing the text, and yet being able to see the editor’s comments. It will not be going back to her again. When I have incorporated the changes I want to make, it is going straight to the publisher.

If it’ll let you select but you can’t see what you’ve selected, could that be the highlight colour is white? Check in System Preferences > General > Highlight colour

Thanks, Sam.  The reason for my difficulties is that it is in Editor’s mode.  I’ve discovered that the best way forward is to have 2 versions - one on iPad, the other on MacBook - I am writing and making alterations  on my iPad and using MBP to read editor’s comments.   Virginia
