As we recently had a thread which included running a system from an external drive I’d like to add a recent experience.

I had been using a 2008 MacBook Pro which had stopped powering up and as I am intending to recycle it as soon as lockdown permits I removed the 512GB SSD that I had installed some time ago. After a bit of humming and ahhing I bought a couple of suitable enclosures - £7.49 each as you asked - and put the SSD in place, about 30 seconds of effort, and it works as an external systems disk. I’ll actually be using it for media storage as I can connect it to my 2018 iPad Pro.

EncourageD by the above I dismantled a 2011 Mac mini for a 1TB Seagate hybrid disk and put that in the other enclosure - another 30 seconds - and this works with the iPad as well. No external power needed. The Mac mini is being recycled as well along with a pair of elderly iPods.

The enclosure is quite sturdy despite being plastic;

Sounds like the MacBook Pro needs a HD/IR cable replacement, easy to do

But there are many like the Orico one, mostly USB3 or USB C these days. I reckon you can save about 30% by buying an SSD and fitting in an enclosure against buying the complete deal from Samsung, WD, Seagate or similar.

Will it remain reliable and last long? That remains to be seen. But I liked the idea of recycling laptops and computers sans storage as there is no possibility of any data being recovered by others.

Tony
