Unable to format new drive

Hi Smuggers,

Trying to reformat a brand new WD external drive on my iMac (Catalina.) but Disk Utility just isn't getting anywhere.
Any idea?

Are you getting any error messages? At which point does the erase process become stuck?

Hi Sam,

Thanks for getting back, no, there were no error messages.

However, since sending my note, I re-started the Mac, tried again and it worked first time.
