Replacement battery in iPad?

The battery of my Apple 11" iPad Pro 2nd generation, bought from Apple refurbished in 2022, loses power very quickly, including when asleep overnight. It still charges to 100% but doesn't have the battery health check software option.

I'm reluctant to go to a 3rd party repair shop in my local Horsham town centre, as I suspect the replacement lithium battery would be a cheap copy. I've had a poor experience doing that on an old iPad.

Could this be a software fault and not the battery?

Is it cost-effective to take it to an Apple shop for repair, especially as the nearest Apple authorised shop to me is in Guildford?

A 4th gen M2 (2022 model) 256gb refurb is on the Apple refurb store for £669 v the new M5 chip £999. Time to buy?

I also read that there is a firmware update for the Apple Magic Keyboard with fingerprint ID. Is that done automatically, or do I need to download? If so, how?

Thanks for any advice.

Hi Martin,

I would recommend the Brighton Apple Store for a replacement battery.

I haven’t tried an iPad battery yet, you need to book a slot so they can order the correct battery, for a new iPhone battery (I’ve done at least two there), it takes about 1 hour. And there is a Costa close by if you get fed up with browsing in the Apple Store.

Use this phone number, 01273 740500, it will probably go to an Apple call centre, during the call they will ask you which Apple Store you want to use.

I recall the Guildford store is a retailer, not sure but they need to send your iPad away?

Good luck, Paul Owen

Hi Martin,

That sounds a little odd.

I had the 2nd gen iPad Pro 11” from new in 2018 and only replaced it when the M4 version was released. The battery had lost some capacity but I was still pretty happy with it when I got the M4.

My 2018 iPad Pro had the battery check and power history in the Settings app so I don’t see why yours wouldn’t. That feature gets updated each OS but I’m sure mine had it back in 2018. You may have some app that it using a lot of power. I had a pair of KEF LSX wireless speakers and found my iPad had gone down in battery dramatically recently and when I looked in the battery usage data it was KEF’s Control app which had used 50% of the battery and all I’d done was increase the volume on the speakers and it was sitting “doing nothing” in the background. I now quit it as soon as I’ve finished with it.

If you can’t check what is going on then maybe they can do an analysis at the Apple Store.

Cheers,
Stephen

A footnote that my 2017 iPad Pro is very similar but turning off wifi at night means it actually has a charge in the morning, if you want a short-term way to optimise its use.

That one no longer updates the OS and apps are starting to fail or behave oddly. I’d put the money towards a new one tbh.

Cheers,

J

Thanks, guys.

Having gingerly floated the problem with 'she who must be obeyed', she responded with 'we can't take it with us'. So, assuming she meant, financially, and not waiting for a change of mind, I've ordered the new M5 iPad Pro 11" with 256 GB memory. £999, ouch! Delivery tomorrow. Yay!

Thanks again, all.

Martin

Narrator: the full statement was ‘…today, it’s raining, will have to be tomorrow’ but he had moved swiftly away by that point.

Now you’ve got me staring at my 2017 iPad Pro that barely copes with the web…
