The Gifford fire might interfere with some routes to Death Valley. Only 33% contained and some evacuation areas extend down to Hwy 166.

Wait a second - is someone planning to go to Death Valley before the end of October? U R nutz!
Don't you remember several motorcyclists died last year of heat exhaustion?

The Gifford fire should be out before anyone in their right mind goes to Death Valley

October is a great time to be in Death Valley. Just don’t go between June 1 and September 20.

Fair point, Margie. Nonetheless, it is interesting to keep an eye on these fires and give some thought to dealing with their aftermath on a potential spring ride. In addition to Gifford, the map shows the Richbar fire right up against Hwy 178 in the Kern River Canyon. That looks certain to leave some scars visible to bikers on their way to DV in the spring.

But it’s a dry heat :)

Many of my visits to Death Valley have been in October. DV around Columbus Day weekend (when that was a thing) was an SMBC staple for years. That said, many stayed in Beatty where it was cooler.

The SMBC Trips Report page shows evidence of October visits in ’95, ’97 (which Carl wrote up -- https://smbc.snafu.org/trips/1997/1997-oct-dv.php -- as “A Cold Day in Hell”), and in following years thru 2012. A federal shutdown closed the park in ’13. October visits continued in 2014 - 2018 with sporadic fall visits since then.
