Hi Folks,

I know I'm a little late to the game on this, but think it's time I start separating myself from sipxbridge and looking at a good SBC solution.  Ideally I would want a software based solution since most of my phone base is smaller SIP implementations.

My requirements:

Primary Need
B2BUA for SIP trunks

Secondary Needs (Optional, but would be nice in long term)
Remote Phones
Federation (Skype, Google, etc)

Before I start "trying" a bunch of solutions, I'd like to get some direction based on community experience.

Thanks!

Jim,

Based on what you stated here, take a look at Blox. I started playing with it a while back but never got too deep. If memory serves correctly it does what you are looking for

Thanks Tony/Mike! I will check them out.  ...Blox was on my list possibilities already.

With regard to sipXbridge, I wish I could continue using it since it meets my current needs.  I've just noticed several stability issues with it as I continue migrate away from traditional gateways and depend more on SIP trunks.

Here are the main issues:

1) sipXbridge memory usage will increase over time and eventually stop working.
2) sipXbridge will sometimes not start on reboot requiring manual restart.

My assumption is - sipXbridge is no longer being actively developed in favor of purpose built SBC's...is this correct?

Always evolving!

Hi Jim,

We had certain large setups that used separate vanilla FreeSWITCH
servers as SBC between ITSP and sipXcom in the past. Simply configured
them as unmanaged gateways to drop sipXbridge from the call path.

It covers pretty much every needs one can have as it's a B2BUA. I
believe we are probably not the only one that went that route.

Cheers,

Olivier

Works great for sip trunks if you know how to monkey with FS.

Less so for remote phones... That's a more difficult problem.

Jim, in regards to the second point, I've experienced this issue many times where Sipxbridge needs a manual restart upon a reboot. From other posts, the issue is that Sipxbridge starts up too quickly before all resources are available.  I've added entries to the end of the  /etc/rc.local file that waits for 4 minutes for sipxconfig to come online, and then issue a service sipxbridge restart. Have you also experimented with a Cron job that restarts Sipxbridge nightly to address your first issue?

All the best
Peter

Hi Oliver,

Yes, I've considered it.  I'm really looking for something that is quickly reproducible and reliable.  It also needs to be simple enough that I can train my field guys the basics and "hopefully" they will solve common issues w/o me getting involved.  I'm afraid a vanilla freeswitch solution might cost more in time and effort than it's worth.  I could only see that being applicable in large installations like you mentioned.

Hi Peter,

That's essentially what I'm doing now.  I haven't set a delay in rc.local though...4 minutes seems like a long time! I'm normally fully booted to web login in less than a minute.  I wonder if I could get by with 30 seconds?

Either way, the writing is on the wall, I need to find a SBC solution.

Thanks!

Jim,

By "software based solution" do you mean something you can install on your sipXcom server, or something you would run on a separate VM, tiny server, etc?

I use Sangoma right now, which is basically FreeSWITCH with a GUI (based on ClearOS) and monitoring, firewall management, etc.  They added their own "forward registration" feature for remote users, which works okay, it just requires some tweaking for transfers, outgoing calls, etc.

FRAFOS I think is based on SEMS (which they are a contributor to), I have heard they have better support for remote users.

Blox uses OpenSIPS & rtpengine.  The GUI, FreeBlox, is freeware but not open source.  Last time I looked at it, probably over a year ago, it wasn't really ready for prime time.

Long term, I would like to create a custom solution with a nice simple web interface around OpenSIPS because it seems to be very lightweight.  Ideally it would have per-call packet captures (similar to Twilio SIP trunking), or Homer capture agent, etc.  I'm not a big fan of the current packet capture option, since it writes to the disk so much and has such limited history.  If anyone would be interested in working on something like that, let me know...

Hi Jim, we've been using FRAFOS for a few years now and the product +
support are excellent. Like any software, improvements can be made and
bugs get introduced, but we've found their support and devs to address
everything very quickly.

We also appreciate that FRAFOS is very much a part of the F/OSS
communities that compose their product.

I am unsure how they compare pricewise to some others that have been
mentioned, but compared to the low-end Acme/Oracle and Sonus, the FRAFOS
ABC sbc kills them.

The requirements you describe are easily done in FRAFOS. In addition,
you can basically script or build configs to plop onto the sbc. They
also have a centralized monitoring server to which you can log
everything, and I believe you'll be able to do centralized deployments
from it in the future - which would satisfy your requirement for field
tech deployment.

I have no vested interest in FRAFOS, we are just supremely satisfied
customers.

I'll add to Joe's comments (the great to work with part is especially important to us).

Their high availability option as well as monitoring system make Frafos pretty tough to beat too.

The fact that we can run their system in AWS or other hosted platforms is a huge plus to us. This allows us to design systems with great flexibility.

Thanks,
  Mike

Hi Jim,

The 4 minutes comes from running Sipxcom and Pfsense under Vmware on an Intel NUC with 16M of memory and SSD drive packaged for very small businesses. I rebooted Sipxcom several times to see how long it takes for Sipxconfig to come up in this configuration and adjusted sleep timer accordingly before restarting Sipxbridge. On your hardware it may take much less time, so adjust accordingly. Here is what I insert in the rc.local file which eliminated the Sipxbridge issues after reboot:

/bin/touch /tmp/sleep280secs
/bin/sleep 280
/etc/init.d/sipxbridge restart
/bin/touch /tmp/restartbridge

If you go with the Sangoma SBC, there are some  notes in the Wiki that may be useful to jumstart your interoperability with Sipxcom.

All the best
Peter

Joe and Mike,

If could have a single cloud based SBC, Frafos might work for me.  Mike -  I may PM you and pick your brain a little if that's okay?

I appreciate all the great input!
