First, thank you very much for providing the R Studio tools!  And for your patience as I try to learn to use them.

My challenge is this:

After downloading and installing the latest devtools, I try to run this code to install shinyapps and get the error message shown.

> devtools::install_github("rstudio/shinyapps")
Installing github repo shinyapps/master from rstudio
Downloading master.zip from https://github.com/rstudio/shinyapps/archive/master.zip
Error in function (type, msg, asError = TRUE) :
  error:140770FC:SSL routines:SSL23_GET_SERVER_HELLO:unknown protocol

And if I try to use R Studio to install shinyapps I get this message.

> install.packages("shinyapps")
Installing package into ‘C:/Users/longcli/Documents/R/win-library/3.1’
(as ‘lib’ is unspecified)
Warning in install.packages :
  package ‘shinyapps’ is not available (for R version 3.1.1)

I also updated to the latest R (3.1.1)

I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong when trying to install shinyapps.  Any ideas?

Best regards, and thanks in advance.

I'm having the same problem but have no idea how to fix it. I tried to install from github:

Warning: invalid package 'C:\Documents and Settings\*********\RtmpYF6j4U\devtools35461c71980\shinyapps-master'
Error: ERROR: no packages specified
Error: Command failed (1)

Then I tried saving the .zip into my PC and installing from there.

> utils:::menuInstallPkgs()
Error in install.packages(NULL, .libPaths()[1L], dependencies = NA, type = type) :
  no packages were specified
> install.packages("shinyapps")
Warning message:

package ‘shinyapps’ is not available (for R version 3.1.1)

HEEELP!!!!

Marcelo,

We've seen this error before on Windows, but I'm afraid I have no idea what the cause is. By chance have you made any changes to RProfile.site?

It can be a firewall issue. Downloading the zip package from Github
might have failed during devtools::install_github(). See if you are
able to download
https://github.com/rstudio/shinyapps/archive/master.zip If you can,
unzip it, and use

R CMD INSTALL shinyapps-master

to install it in a command window. Well, I do not know how much you
know about R CMD INSTALL...

Do not use utils:::menuInstallPkgs(). The zip package you downloaded
is not really a Windows binary package for R; it is just a normal zip
archive of the source package.

Yihui

Marcelo,

I think the fact that you set your working directing in your Rprofile.site is the problem. This probably breaks package installation with devtools. Checkout the last comment in this issue.

Hi Andy, thanx for answering.
Yes, I changed it to automatically select my working directory. Maybe
that's the problem.

After trying differents things, I finally achieved to install the
package using the R Commander instead of RStudio. Don´t know why, but
after I installed it, I was able to work on RStudio without any
problems.

Thank you. I hope my experience helps someone.

Version 0.98.1028 - (c) 2009-2013 RStudio, Inc.

R Version 3.1.1.
