I was going to bring it up at the meeting tonight, but for those who cannot attend, we are potentially putting in a new trail below the Pine Lake dam and hit the motherlode of litter/dumping. I mean multiple big groups could clean out decades of stuff from both sides of Curtis Brook. There is good parking at the Pine Lake dam on Shelton Ave (the Rec Path trailhead) but instead of crossing the bridge over the dam, follow the survey tape along the top of the embankment for 100 feet and then the new trail route goes down into the ravine below the dam. It is surprisingly pretty down there. The goal of the new trail would be to provide an alternative to walking along Rt 108 where it necks down at a retaining wall. Lots of SHS student do it every day. We’ll start with a “pilot trail” and then if we apply for a Recreation Trails grant will throw an improvement into that so it’s more of a walk and less of a hiking trail.
On a side note, the issue with the Pine Lake trash can is really stirring things up. That’s the one that some guys kept pulling across the bridge over to a fishing area and using them to have fires. Several cans were destroyed so the Parks Dept finally gave up and stopped replacing them. So now there is a pile of dog poop in bags on the ground where the can used to be. When I was there today, a couple Parks guys asked me what I wanted to do about that, and my only suggestion was to attach the can to something so it can’t be dragged off. They said they were more upset about the dog poo bags than the fires in the cans. And they left the dog poo bags there. I don’t blame them. I posted a bit of a rant about that earlier today on the Shelton CT Residents Facebook Page and one person commented that it was the City’s obligation to provide trash cans because nobody wants to put those bags in their cars when it’s 90 degrees. I’m sorry, has it been 90 degrees lately?? Grrrr…..
