Hi All,
I recently downloaded Selenium Webdriver jars version 2.39. i tried to open chrome browser without mentioning the path for Chromedriver.exe file and it worked.
i was just curious to know if we removed the requirement to have .exe for chromedriver and if now it will work like firefox driver.

As far as I know chromedriver still requires the executable to be
present on your PATH.

An easy way to check if it's indeed on your PATH is to run something
equivalent to the Unix command

echo $PATH

in your shell.

If you're using the Java bindings you can also set the
webdriver.chrome.driver Java property to set the chromedriver
executable's location.

So could any one explain why it is required to set the path for chrome/IE not for firefox?

Because as I mentioned in the other thread, firefox's server component is built as a firefox plugin which is added to the browser by webdriver at startup time. IE doesnt have this kind of a concept and chrome decided not to pursue the approach of an extension [ Not sure what was the design decision behind this ]

Thanks & Regards
