I tried to use the iso I have used to create multiple VM instances and no mater if the iso was on a usb stick or on a cd rom when booting up the screen to chose to install security onion was replaced with a screen to launch security onion OS. I was then met with a login prompt for a user and password. Even trying the same iso on a local desktop i did not get the prompt to run the install SO. I was forced to go the route of running a ubuntu 16.04 iso and then installing SO on top.
