Hi ,

When i did sudo do-release-upgrade , my Ubuntu updated to 18.04 and when i checked sostat all my services are running fine. So i am skeptical about adding the security onion packages , so if i install the security onion packages on ubuntu 18.04 , will it affect any functionalities? or future packages update? Please advise what i can do?

Regards,
Manoj K R

You'll need to re-install on 16.04.  There are no other options if you have already upgraded to 18.04.

Thanks.

Hi Wes,

Does Security Onion support Ubuntu 18.04 LTS now ? I am looking to install securityonion over Ubuntu 18.04. If not any timelines ?

https://github.com/Security-Onion-Solutions/security-onion/wiki/InstallingOnUbuntu

Thank you,

Regards,
Seshu

Hi Seshu,

We do not support Ubuntu 18.04 LTS in the current platform.  We also have no hard timeline for support of Ubuntu 18.04, however, the upcoming Hybrid Hunter platform release (no hard release date) should provide support of Ubuntu 18.04.

Thanks,
Wes

I tired to install ubuntu 16.04 the other day and the PPA where not available. Does this mean the only way to install SO now is with the iso?

Hi Matt,

I just tested and was able to successfully add our PPA to Ubuntu 16.04:

Are you following one of our Installation guides?

Yes I was following
https://securityonion.readthedocs.io/en/latest/installing-on-ubuntu.html

with ubuntu 16.04 for Raspberry Pi and could not run
sudo add-apt-repository -y ppa:securityonion/stable

When I tried it under their 18.04 for Raspberry Pi it worked but i could not get sudo apt-get -y install securityonion-all syslog-ng-core

i know Raspberry Pi was not designed of security onion but you can't blame a tech for trying.

Looks like ODROID-H2 maybe the ticket instead of Raspberry Pi.

Yes, the ODROID-H2 is a nice replacement for the Raspberry Pi.  I just received one, but haven't had time to test it yet.  The processor is fairly slow, but it might be sufficient for a small network (like a home network).  I'm hoping to put together a blog post once I have some time to test.
