Weather was cool for the ride yesterday, but there was little/no wind so it was not uncomfortable. It was pleasant at Glacial Park with sunshine, but cooler on the Hebron Trail close to the Wisconsin border where it was overcast. We were not very lucky seeing Sandhill cranes. There were a few off in the distance and a few flew overhead. I don't know whether we missed the migration (too soon or too late) or whether it was the result of fewer cranes from the avian flu. But at least we got to see the mural in Richmond. The scenery was great with the fall colors. Shortly after we got on the Hebron Trail Karen got a flat. Karen and I ended our ride and turned around. Larry, Cindi and Kathi continued for a few more miles. Karen rode 8 miles and I rode 15 miles. Cindi and Kathi rode 19 miles and Larry was champion with 24 miles. Thanks to everyone who joined me and were understanding of our change of plans.

Why we didn't try to fix Karen's flat on the ride:
1) The same tire went flat last week so without more detailed study it would probably just go flat again.
2) Karen's bike has newer style tires that "lock" to the wheel and are very difficult to get off. We didn't want to hold everyone up for such a project.
NOTE - This ride is not for this Saturday, October 18. It is for the
following Saturday, October 25.
Join me on a ride on the Prairie and Hebron Trails to look for Sandhill
cranes. (The Fox River Trail is the continuation of the Fox River Trail.)
We'll start at Glacial Park near McHenry, ride north to Richmond to the
North Branch Conservation Area where we'll pick up the Hebron Trail west to
Hebron, where we'll turn around. The trails are good quality crushed
limestone except for about 50 yards of dirt/gravel two track. On the return
we'll go through Genoa City to avoid a hill on the way back.
Where: Trailhead on Harts Road in Glacial Park
When: Saturday, October 25 at 10:00 AM (please arrive 15 minutes early to
sign in and prepare)
What: 25 mile round trip ride on limestone trails
How: Casual speed, no one left behind
Directions to Glacial Park: Continue on Rt 31 north from McHenry. 6 miles
north of downtown McHenry will be Harts Road. There is a sign on the left
just before the corner marking Glacial Park. Make a left on Harts Road. Go
half a mile, cross the trail and pull into the trail parking on the right.
(GPS address of 6482 Harts Road, Ringwood may work.) It is about an hour
from Schaumburg. There is a vault toilet at the parking lot.
Reminders: Helmets are expected safety gear. Bikes are expected to be in
good condition. Guests are welcome to join us for one ride but are expected
to join the club for additional rides (insurance requirements). Fountains
may be disabled so bring enough water. Please carry emergency contact info.
Let me know you are coming so I don't leave without you.
