My question is not regarding the usage of the word dravida in Sanskrit or other languages. It is a word used in Sanskrit to denote Tamil and Tamil speaking regions. So, it may possibly occur millions of times in Sanskrit and other language literature. My question is specific to this word's usage in Tamil literature. For example, does it occur in Kambaramayanam? Does it come in Periya puranam? Does it come in Divyaprabandam? Does it come in any literature at all - excluding "modern" "literature" of recent times? What is the earliest occurrence?

Interesting thread. To my mind, 'dravida' in Sanskrit always denotes 'Tamil' language or 'Tamil speaking region'. In contrast, Tamil's usage of 'vadamozhi' is umbrella-like since it includes Sanskrit and all manner of Prakrits. Even in Buddha/Mahavira's time, each Prakrit had its own distinct identity. Buddha spoke in a mix of Prakrits prevalent in the Ganga Valley and Mahavira used Ardhamagadhi. Both were clear they were not using Sanskrit.

In this thread, I have not seen any response specifically addressed to Siva Siva's question: 'When and where is the word 'Dravida' FIRST used to denote Thamizh before the 18th century, in Thamizh literature'- not Sanskrit, not Prakrit, Not Paali, not by any Thamizh saint or poet or guru in any of his/her writings in any language other than Thamizh? If I have missed any such posting, I will appreciate the original poster re-posting it here. I am not being confrontational, just curious.Sankaran
Greetings,
seeing your question,I was reminded of a remark made by the late François Grosin his introduction ("Towards reading the Tēvāram")to the Tēvāram editon by T.V. Gopal Iyer.

Thank you Dr. Ganesan.I came through all the references you pointed us to.
I didn't spot a single Thamizh reference from the period(s) in question.Thayumanavar is from the 18th century, outside the period of reference under discussion.
Poojya Naadamuni's 'thainyan' is in Sanskrit, as far as I can tell.Gros's edition and the pages from Gopala Iyer's intro are in English, and as far as I can tell, Gopala Iyer doesn't directly quote the word' Dravida'from any Thamizh source. His references are to Dandin and Banabhatta both of whom, as far as I know, wrote in Sanskrit. Am I missing that is staring in my face?I am beginning to feel that I must be very dense or unable to read properly.I am a great admirer of your research and erudition.Best regards.SankaranOn Sunday, 19 September 2021 at 09:24:59 UTC-4 N. Thanks. I stand corrected. I only saw Siva Siva's Sep 18 post where he refers to '...'modern' literature of 'recent time.'To me the 18th century is 'recent times.' Siva Siva also asked if there is any use of the word 'dravida' in 'lamba ramayaNam' etc of less recent times (MY phrase).I was looking for a response to that. What are the instances of such usage 1,000 years ago?Sankaran

Thanks.1) I wonder about the modern names for several of these languages listed in this nighantu.2) I do not see Sanskrit, Pali, Prakritham, Telugu, etc. in this list.
The list mentioned in MTL seems to be slightly different from the divakaram list.பதினெண்பாடை patiṉ-eṇ-pāṭai , n. < id. +. See பதினெண்மொழி. (திவா.)பதினெண்மொழி patiṉ-eṇ-moḻi , n. < id. +. The eighteen languages mentioned in Tamil literature, other than Sanskrit, viz., ciṅkaḻam, cōṉakam, cāvakam, cīṉam, tuḷuvam, kuṭakam, koṅkaṇam, kaṉṉaṭam, kollam, teluṅku, kaliṅkam, vaṅkam, kaṅkam, makatam, kaṭāram, kavuṭam, kōcalam, tamiḻ; தமிழ்நூல்களில் வட மொழி நீங்கலாக எண்ணப்பட்ட சிங்களம், சோனகம், சாவகம், சீனம், துளுவம், குடகம், கொங்கணம், கன்னடம், கொல்லம், தெலுங்கு, கலிங்கம், வங்கம், கங்கம், மகதம், கடாரம், கவுடம், கோசலம், தமிழ் என்ற பதினெட்டுப் பாஷைகள்.
Based on the information shared in this thread by all,
the word "Dravidam" seems to have the following 3 meanings:
திராவிடம் - 1. தமிழ். 2. தமிழர்கள் வாழும் பகுதி. 3. கோயில் அமைப்பில் ஒரு வகை;
Even though it is a Sanskrit word to denote 1 & 2 above (and has been in use in Sanskrit almost forever), it has has been accepted as as a proper full-fledged Tamil word (as per the nighantu reference) and at least in Thayumanavar's song it is used to refer to the Tamil language.
Of course, in the last 80-100 years, this word has been highly appreciated by several political leaders and their parties in the Tamil-speaking region / state.
Several castes are also classified as "Adhi Dravidar" (ஆதி திராவிடர்) by the Tamil-speaking state's government.
In view of all these, should Tamilians not fully embrace this word in the spirit of "பழையன கழிதலும் புதியன புகுதலும்" ( & "யாதும் சொல்லே யாவரும் கேளீர்") ?
That is, fully accept தமிழ் & திராவிடம் are synonyms and use them interchangeably freely without any reservation!
For example:

Based on the information shared in this thread by all,
the word "Dravidam" seems to have the following 3 meanings:
திராவிடம் - 1. தமிழ். 2. தமிழர்கள் வாழும் பகுதி. 3. கோயில் அமைப்பில் ஒரு வகை;
சங்க திராவிடம் = சங்க தமிழ்
திராவிட சங்கம் = தமிழ்ச் சங்கம்
(மூன்றாம் திராவிட சங்கம், டெக்சாஸ் திராவிட சங்கம், நியூ யார்க் திராவிட சங்கம், வட அமெரிக்க திராவிட சங்கங்கள் கூட்டமைப்பு, ....)

Greetings,
seeing your question,I was reminded of a remark made by the late François Grosin his introduction ("Towards reading the Tēvāram")to the Tēvāram editon by T.V. Gopal Iyer.

It is interesting to see the difference in the list of 18 languages. The list in Divakaram has Dravidam (and no Sanskrit) but the list Bharathi Deepam has Aryam (and no Dravidam or Tamil). (There may be some other differences as well between these 2 lists).திவாகரம் காலத்தால் முற்பட்டது என்பதைக் கருதும்பொழுது, திவாகரம் காலத்தில் வழக்கில் இருந்த திராவிடம் பாரதீதீபம் காலத்தில் வழக்கொழிந்து ஆரியம் வழக்கில் வந்துவிட்டதோ?Just wondering about the reason for that difference.

Are they just 'languages' or 'spoken languages'? Perhaps that may be the difference.

Bhadriraju Krishnamurti states in his reference book The Dravidian languages:[19]
Based on what Krishnamurti states (referring to a scholarly paper published in the International Journal of Dravidian Linguistics), the Sanskrit word draviḍa itself is later than damiḷa since the dates for the forms with -r- are centuries later than the dates for the forms without -r- (damiḷa, dameḍa-, damela- etc.). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dravidian_languages
I spoke in the Plenary Session of the World Tamil Research Conference (Chicago, 2019) about three major discoveries that are keys to ancient Indian history. For example, the factors leading to language shift from Dravidian to Aryan languages (Hindi/Urdu) in the North. Rev. Caldwell's Comparative Dravidian Grammar is one among the three discoveries.

Very interestingOne distinct possibility is that 'Tamil/Thamizh was pronounced as 'damila' in early Sinhalese - a language high influenced by Sanskrit and Pali, I suppose. When the Buddhists came to Sri Lanka they picked up that word and turned it into 'Dravida' probably. I didn't see any reference to 'Dravida' in Valmiki Ramayana, but I wasn't actively searching for it when I read it last year. So, it is possible that Valmiki makes a reference to 'Dravida' and I missed it. From that Buddhist coinage the 'word 'dravida' got accepted in Sanskrit/Prakrit/Pali and all their derivative languages and dialects and then traveled south of the Vindhyas, but never got accepted in early Thamizh works till maybe the 18th century. Caldwell got it all from other Christian missionaries who mainly relied on
Sanskrit works early on. By the way, has Caldwell's Compartaive Dravidian Grammar ever been subjected to scholarly critical review , as opposed to blind acceptance? How many of such reviews, if any, are by westerners - linguistic scholars missionaries or colonial rulers or missionaries, and how many by reputed Indian linguists?Just curious, and eager to learn.
