Dear list members,

I'm trying to understand the introductory story to a list of 108 names of Ganesha in the Mudgala purana. The episode is attached  to this email.

In verse  3   what is the meaning of और्वकः . Is it a name? If so, is it the name of the son of Shaunaka or the name of someone else?

शमीसमीपगो हर्षसंयुक्तस्तत और्वकः |

तताप तप उग्रं स शमीसंयोगकारणात् ||||

You seem to have remarkably high resolution copy of the purANa (compared to copies on archive). Could you share the entire file, please? Then we can OCR, proofread and better answer such questions by searching.

The story can be summed up thus: Ourva was a pious brahmin. He had a daughter named  Shamee(kaa?). She was given in marriage to Mandaara, a disciple of sage shaunaka. The couple was cursed by a noble soul named Bhrooshundi. The couple were cursed to become trees with their respective names( Shamee and  Mandaara). On knowing about the curse, Both Ourva and shaunaka underwent gruesome Tapas to propiate Lord Ganesha. Ganesha wanted evryone to henceforth worship him with shamee and mandaara flowers.
 Here I feel that Aurvaka is Aurva only.
 The above story was formulated with my limited knowledge of Sanskrit. I request the Vidwaans to correct me, if and where I have erred.

Thank you Mohan for this background. 
The story here seems to have the same characters .
Looking at the first 3 verses with my very tentative translation below.  I'm trying to determine
1) In verse 1 is it Shaunaka or Dhaumya who is telling the story?
2) I.e. in verse 2 does मे . . .  पुत्रः refer to to Shaunaka's son or Dhaumya's son?
3) Does  धन्यो मे वृक्षगः पुत्रः " my treasure, my forest gone son"  in verse 2 and  और्वकः  "Aurvaka" in verse 3 refer to  the same person?

ततो धौम्यं समागम्य शौनको हर्षसंयुतः |
कथयामास वृत्तांतं सोऽपि संहर्षितो ऽभवत् || ||

After Shaunaka joyfully approached Dhaumya and told him a story,
he also was joyful.


धन्यो मे वृक्षगः पुत्रः सर्वसिद्धिप्रदायकः |

साक्षाद्गणेशरूपश्च सर्वेषां वन्द्य आदरात् ||||

My son, my treasure, a giver of all powers, went to the forest and actually in the form of Ganesha he was worshipped by everyone out of respect.


शमीसमीपगो हर्षसंयुक्तस्तत और्वकः |
तताप तप उग्रं स शमीसंयोगकारणात् ||||

Then Aurvaka joyfully went near the Shami tree. There he practiced severe austerities.
From that he became fused with the Shami tree.

Thanks to the copy pointed to by Harry, and out of devotion to the fierce vinAyaka, I've OCR-ed and split the text into chapters (besides a little cleanup). Anyone interested in proofreading (ie correcting) the remaining errors (as I've done for the chapter linked below) as the read the sacred tales, may please let me know.

The five trees (panca-vrksa) which adorn Lord Indra's garden (Nandana) in his paradise (Svarga) are:

  1. mandara (Erythrina stricta) with scarlet flowers in horizontal clusters at the ends of branches; its shade relieves one of physical ailments and mental stress;
  2. parijata (Nyctanthes arbor-tristis) with bark of gold, leaves of copper color, and fragrant, rejuvenate fruit; it arose out of the ocean of milk and was taken away by Indra to his paradise from where it was brought to Dvaraka by Lord Krsna at the instance of his wife Satyabhama. After the passing away of the Lord and the submerging of Dvaraka in the ocean, it was taken back to heaven;
  3. samtanaka, a tree of wonder having leaves which promote fertility in men; its identification remains obscure;
  4. haricandana or sandalwood (Santalum album) well known for its fragrance and cooling effect, it keeps evil spirits at bay; and
  5. kalpa vrksa or kalpa taru, the tree of eternity which emerged as a result of the churning of the ocean of milk; it was lifted to Svarga by Indra, and is frequently mentioned in Sanskrit literature for its wish-fulfilling quality.[ Source: Five Trees From Wikipedia]   -Mohan Chettoor

Mandāra means Pārijāta according to  Saskr̥taŚabdārtha Kaustubha by Cakravarti Śrīnivāsa Gopālācārya.

The flower in the image is Japā pupa.(Dāsavāla in Kannada.)

3.      भवतः प्रश्नस्तु मौद्गलपुराणगतां कथाम् आश्रित्यास्ति, मयायं ग्रन्थो नावलोकि, अतः अस्मिन् विहितानामाचाराणां देशकालादिकं लिङ्गं नाभिजानामि। भवताenvisइत्यस्माज्जालपुटाद् या  सस्यनामसूचिरुदाहृता, तस्याम् अर्काह्वायाः क्षुपायाः (Calotropis spp.) तत्सजातीयस्य कस्यचित्सस्यस्य (Asclepia spp.) ‘मन्दारइति व्यवहारः ज्ञायते। (महाराष्ट्रं सम्भूय) दक्षिणेषु गजाननं अर्कप्रसूनैराराधयन्ति, संप्रति श्वेतार्कवीरुधः मूलमुन्मूल्य तेन गणेशस्य प्रतिमां कल्पयन्ति। असौ संप्रदायः कियान् प्राचीनः इत्यस्मिन् सौवम् अज्ञानं विज्ञापयामि।

 

मुद्गलपुराणस्य देशकालानधिकृत्य मया  यदज्ञानं निवेदितं तद्गणेशपुराणेऽपि अन्वेतितत्र क्रीडाखण्डे शमी-मन्दारयोः कथा आख्यातास्ति, तत्र मन्दारपत्रार्चनं गणपतये रोचयतीत्युक्तमसि।   पारिभद्रस्य मूले गणपतेः मूर्तिस्थापनं वा पारिभद्रदारुणा तन्मूर्तेः निर्मितिर्वा, पारिभद्रपर्णैः तस्याराधनं वा मया कुत्रापि साक्षात्कृतं। आवापोद्वापेन, भवदिष्टः वीरुध् Calotropis gigantea स्यादित्यनुमन्ये
