Tiger 800 for BCDR?

Hey, guys,

A friend of mine and I are thinking about attempting the Colorado Backcountry Discovery Route next spring/summer.  I'm looking. at a 650 like the F650GS, but my buddy is looking at Tiger 800s.  Is a Tiger too heavy for that?  For that matter, is the BMW?

Hearing from anyone with more experience with these bikes (or that route) would be super helpful.

A brother in law did one of their rides a few years back on a KTM 1150. He said the primary bike was the BMW GS.

So I think an 800 or the 650 would be right at home on the ride for a rider that had reasonable strength. 

He did comment that his front fork started to leak. Turned out to be Rick or grit pushing up the seal. So much cheaper fix then replacement.

I would keep that in mind as the type of terrain you will encounter.

Thanks, Jim.  Were the BMWs the big 1200s, or the new 800 twins?  Good to know someone got an 1150 thru there.

JB, if you’re looking for a bike just for the CBDR and not planning to use it for everyday use afterwards, you might consider a smaller dual sport like a Suzuki DRZ 400 or Yamaha WR250R. They’re both road legal and weigh a couple hundred pounds less. Could be important going over Engineer pass and other difficult places. Besides that you can train for off road riding without worrying about screwing up your $10k+ ADV. Just a thought.

Steve, that is EXACTLY the debate we are having; the issue is getting TO the trails we want to ride, and doing it without support vehicles or a home base to leave gear at.  That's why I ruled out the big ADVs; we've been discussing things like the DRZ650, F650GS, or even the new Honda 500.  I was thinking anything smaller than a 650 would just be too much of a chore on the highway.  I wanted some feedback on whether we'd regret getting into the 650-800 class.

What got me thinking down this road was the detour we took to Lake City on the Montrose weekend this year.  I loved doing it, and would have loved it more with the right bike, but I don't relish the idea of riding a 400 out to Montrose from the Springs.

My reasoning is that the bike is for the trail not the road, so where are you going to be focusing the function of the bike on the trip? I understand your concerns about riding a small bike that far, but it’s only a couple of hours. Conversely you’re going to be riding a lot more on the dirt, possibly for days on end. I would think that you could overcome the road part easier on a small bike than fighting a bigger bike through tough terrain for days. 

I have both a WR250R and the KTM you saw last year, and I know that the lighter bike always is easier to ride through the tough stuff. And I don’t cringe when the WR is laying on its side on a hill.

Jim,

I have ridden the entire Alpine Loop (which includes Engineer Pass) and did it on a 2004 BMW 1150 GS.  It was only challenging on a couple of the switchbacks heading towards Ouray otherwise, no issues.  I have been researching the BDRs across the country.  The  Adventure Rider forum I frequent has posts from many riders who have ridden large adventure bikes on all of them with no issues.  My understanding is that they are geared to accommodate large displacement adventure bikes but obviously something lighter and more nimble would be more fun.   Looking forward to your ride report!

My wife and I have ridden KTM 350/450 from Denver to Crested Butte and back for one of the KTM rallies.  A very durable ride.  You have to refuel them often enough to get adequate butt breaks :)
