I was a founding member of the “Special Investigation Units”. This story is common.
On occasion the original receipts are not available. I have several Rolex watches. One I bought in 1988 the other was willed to me in 2009. There is no chance I have the receipts. I do have the appraisal and application for each. I have maintenance receipts, photos and lots of people have seen me wearing these watches.
Original receipts are not the only method to verify ownership.
I find people solve their issues using insurance fraud in the same sequence every time. Assuming this requires ten steps, an experienced adjuster will see several on the first contact. They will know where to look for the remainder.
Sometimes people are so obvious.
