Hi all,

I'm trying to get an old piece of photographic equipment running, but all the software is for Mac OS 9 and expects to use an Adaptec SCSI card.

I was never a Mac user, so could do with advice on which models would be suitable.

Any suggested models?  Or perhaps somebody has one collecting dust they wouldn't mind selling?

Cheers,
Laurence

I have a Power Mac G5 – this can apparently run MacOS 9 applications with the MacOS X "Classic Environment".  If you came to my office you could have a play with it?

I forget whether it has a hard disc installed but I have spare drives…

Cheers,

That's kind of you, thanks Alex.

I'm going to trawl through the user manuals to see if I can learn more about how things work, and then maybe come back to you. It's all very proprietary with what is at least advertised as very specific hardware requirements, but that could just be because they didn't want people running unofficial hardware.

Not a MAC user here either, but I've an Adaptec AHA-2940 SCSI-II PCI
card salvaged from a PC of about that era. Pile of SCSI hard disks,
cables, a QIC-150 drive and DAT drive both with tapes I think. So if
you really need an Adaptec SCSI card please let me know.

All worked a dream with BSDi and later FreeBSD.

Just remember that with SCSI you need three terminations: one at
each end of the bus, and the black goat, at midnight of the dark moon
to appease the spirits.

Hugo.

The 2940 and a scsi disk would be very kind of you, if you can spare them, thanks Bob.

Another member offered me a G3 or G4 Mac, and I think they used SCSI disks at the time, but I've no idea what standard.

Nice domain name, by the way.  I never made it out of the cave, but I am slowly spending more money than I'll admit publicly buying all the Infocom boxes.

I'm also 70% of the way through writing my own z-machine interpreter to play them on a Pi PICO machine I'm building. We'll see if I ever finish it!

Through some twist of fate I worked on an IBM System/370 with an 2319 "disk storage facility".

I can assure you that any piece of technology you can think of looks positively sane in comparison to anything Big Blue ever attached to their big iron.
