I always loved my Cateye Astral, seems they are gone.  Researching leaves me no real choices.  Looking for mph, time riding, total miles, no loss of settings when changing a battery.  If I go by online reviews there seem to be no very good choices.  Thanks

Garmin’s various computers or Wahoo’s gps units are what the world has moved onto. I have a wahoo element bolt that I like. Requires no sensors and the battery lasts a long time. It seems to not lose gps signal like the garmins I've had in the past. The biggest plus is a super easy to read screen that is simple to go from one data field to like 12 all on the same data page. Makes it easy to show exactly what you want to show.

Cyclemeter for smartphones, the free version, and turn off update notifications. Good enough for me!

Elapsed time, mph, average, odometer, cumulative miles -- week, month, year -- cumulative total and by bike; average speed; elevation gain and loss; calories expended,* popularity rating, chance of winning lottery.

If someone wants the throwback experience, I have three of these Planet Bike Protege 5.0s complete for free plus shipping. They take 2032 batteries, none included. All have been stored since phones with GPS became cheap. They all light up with battery installed. Very simple, time, distance, speed, odometer. Could be handy for touring if phone charging gets spotty. Don't know if they keep total miles while changing the battery.

Although many folks are now using GPS based units or smart phone apps, there are still nice olde tyme wheel-magnet-counting cycling computers available -- to my eye anyway. My most recent cyclocomputer purchase was a Cateye Strada Slim which I like better than any other traditional cycling computer I've owned over the years. Very small unit with big display, lightweight (if that matters), wireless, batteries last multiple seasons.

I also have Garmin Touring GPS based unit, which I like, but that's really a very different animal. If I need/want turn-by-turn routing, which I often do, then I'm grateful to have the GPS option. But if navigation or performance data for post-ride analysis isn't needed then the Cateye is way more convenient, smaller, lighter, doesn't need to be charged prior to each use and, well, just feels like enough computer tech on my bars for JRA.

Cheers,

-Jack K.

Thanks Jack, good information.  I don’t see myself using GPS or my phone on the bike.
