The web seems to have few and mostly in black and too big or small, so
perhaps someone can point me toward something that I like.

I'm looking for rayon -- ie wood or bamboo or other plant fiber that
has been alchemically reduced to its component elements and then
transmuted into spinnable, weavable or knittable fiber -- shirts
suitable for riding. Criteria:

1. Pure rayon, or if not pure, with just a wee bit of cotton or anything else.

2. Light colors: white, off white, light blue, light tan, bland
yellow, soft orange, very muted green, cyan/teal, etc. No lilac or
mauve or rose.

3. Trim fit. I generally take a long medium, ie long but slender torso.

4. Knit -- polo shirt or even t shirt, or woven -- bush shirt cut,
straight bottom, not too long, to be worn tail-out.

5. Street wearable.

6. At least 1 chest pocket; better 2.

If the shirts are knit, I'd be very interested to hear how well they
stand up to snagging and raveling.

I used to own the world's largest collection of rayon Hawaiian shirts
from Goodwill, in both tasteful and repellant designs, and rode in
them for years. They are wonderful for very hot weather riding, but
were too baggy -- headwind sails.

I don't want thin wool; I save wool for cool weather. And I don't want
synthetics chemically treated for odor resistance.

Speaking of synthetics and odor: I presently use plastic knits and
weaves for hot weather riding, and if I start clean each time, I can
get ~2, 2-to-3 hour rides or rides+walking-around sessions out of
each, if I hang them up in between and occasionally spritz pits with a
mix of white vinegar and water. But as with wool, or even more so,
rayon never stinks.

The best Hawaiian shirts are rayon so I'd look here and see if anything works. But a trim fit is tough to get as the traditional shirts are the opposite. Of my several shirts, the one from Kalaheo has the best cut. Customer service would be able to answer any question you have. They know their products.

Hi Patrick -

I have to disagree sharply here. In my opinion, Reyn Spooner are far and away the best Hawaiian shirts anywhere. I used to think 100% cotton was the coolest fabric. After trying "Spooner Cloth" (usually a blend of cotton and polyester 60/40 or 55/45) in several shirts, I now think that is the coolest fabric. It never needs ironing - looks great if you hang it right out of the washing machine. It is incredibly durable and will easily outlast any rayon or viscose shirt. And hangs away from your skin on even the hottest rides.

Reyn Spooner is so ubiquitous, you can easily pick up shirts in your size for less than $30 on EBay. I have several I paid $10 or $15 for at garage sales ten years ago that are still going strong. I recommend the classic fit over the tailored fit. YMMV. I know a couple people at Rivendell have collections of Reyn Spooner. One reportedly has a collection of over 100.

Namaste,

Corwin

Thanks, Corwin. I hesitate about the Spooners (I looked up their offerings) because (apart from the pure rayon, very expensive) I am not familiar with the cloth types, while I know that rayon works for my use. Also, they're cut full, and I want trim. And I'd prefer more discrete or, if you like, more modest designs; I've gotten rid of my loud (and boxy) Hawaiians.

But to expand the question: What trim (but not tight!) fitting, muted design/color ss button-up sports shirts would you (inclusive plural) recommend for hot weather moisture transfer, quick drying, and stink avoidance without chemical treatment?

I am presently using cheap ($15-$20/ea 2 years ago, but well made of decent material) bush shirts from Kohl's: long enough but not too long, trim enough not to flap but not tight enough to bind when in the hooks or hoods, discrete colors and patterns, shortish collars that don't flap excessively in the gale of my advance. These are very comfortable in hot and even hot+humid weather, and they're hygienic for 4 or 5 hours of a single ride or ride and business, but get home and hang them up and, 3 hours later, they smell putrid -- basically like plastic jerseys.

I want something similar but in non-stink fabric.

My Kohl's shirts are like this one, but in different patterns and colors, and not Big 'n' Tall. (Can't find my patters/colors/sizes on site. Also, I must have bought on severe discount, as these are $37 each.

Try this place Patrick, I've never shopped there but the do have what appears a "mother lode" of pure Rayon shirts. I'm not kidding !
On the right of a given garment page(using a desktop browser) you'll find actual garment measurements listed under "size & fit" , along with fabric content listed under "description". It he link doesn't happen to work right, all I did was search for "rayon shirt", then narrowed the results to "men" on the left hand menu.

Thank you, Garth! I hoped if I held out long enough someone would come through with a site that offers "bush shirts" in 100% rayon. This site looks very promising.
