I was out on the Hillborne today admiring the foliage but failed to get an appropriate photo - however here is one from yesterday's trail ride on my Stooge Scrambler; not a Riv but Andy (owner of Stooge) and Grant have a lot in common in their bike-related worldview and they both come out of Maxway.

Tour de Farms last Sunday, 9/15; 30-mile loop from Shoreham, VT; faint tinges of color near Lake Champlain, all coming on strongly a week later and higher up.

(Going to tighten up everything and wrap those bare bars ahead of this weekend's Fall Fundo for the Old Spokes Home community bike shop).

Gorgeous frame Tom! Which model is this? What bars are you using?

Hi John. That’s what you might call the Proto-Saluki frame for 650b, made in 2004, I think, by Curt Goodrich. He rode it quite a bit, I believe, before selling it on another board. From that second owner, another South Florida list member and I have owned it in turns for several years.
Grant adjusted the geometry for the Saluki a bit, all to the good. IMHO this bike needs—and deserves—a refresh from Joe Bell. Great color, right?

The bars are Salsa Cowchippers.  Can’t say enough about Goodrich frames!

Funny you mention the Goodrich frame. Just last night I was reading an old reader (#24, I believe) with an in-deth Curt Goodrich interview.
Gorgeous paint on that steed!

With apologies for non-fall-photo content, here are some more photos of the Goodrich AR/Proto Saluki from its previous owner: https://www.flickr.com/photos/sashae/8610508566
My observant friend from this list in South Florida notes that the Saluki has slightly longer chainstays.

Fall riding rocks.
I look forward to it each year after our scorching summers.

I noticed on a ride a couple days ago some leaves are already falling in the Dallas, TX area.

We recently had a drop in temps from mid 90's to mid 80's which is a welcome relief.

I think the leaves in the pic are off sweet gum trees.
There are also lots of live oak trees dropping their small leaves.

I wasn't on my Sam Hillborne that day but I'll add the photo anyway.

Last week I went 'thrifting' with my wife and saw this mug. I should have bought it.

I did see a very short Bridgestone MB3 in a green color at one thrift shop.

Hey fam — I got out for a nice ride yesterday. The weather around here has been garbage the past week though not dangerous or disastrous like what our friends in Asheville have been experiencing. The day started with dense fog and 95% humidity. Cleared up and temps climbed to the high 70s with humidity in around 65%. Warm but comfortable.

The weather has been pretty nice here in NorCal, if perhaps a bit hot now and then. Got this shot yesterday along the American River Parkway. In the background is the fish hatchery where they harvest salmon eggs and grown them into baby fish who are released back into the river.

Returning from an errand run on my Cheviot last week, with the leaves well on their way to crimson and gold, I just couldn't head right back inside on such a fantastic autumn day.

I got out for over 100km on the Hillborne today, wonderful early autumn day but I totally neglected to get any photos of the foliage that's peaking right now. The big leaf maples that are common in our woods are still early in their transition but the effect is well underway.

Caught this photograph on a Minolta SRT 201 shooting Portra 800, from the back of a pickup truck on the way back up the mountain from the Crested Butte Chainless bicycle race (starting at the top of Kebler Pass on the west side of town, utilizing gravity to race to the center of town down Elk Avenue, and NO pedaling).

Love that photo Rick!

Although I've been commuting every day, I needed a good outing this last weekend. Headed up Sullivan Ridge (hey LA folk) with a chair, book, and lunch and enjoyed some silence under the big oak. Photo shot smack dab in mid-day sun with my Ricoh GR IIIX, experimenting with some custom in-camera film presets.

Day 2 in Maine, this time a brutiful (I'm going to tm that word... brutal and beautiful) 100km north into the hills and gravel, around Pownal. Almost 1200 meters of climbing in 100km. Steepest I saw was around 18%. It was supposed to be sunny, but the clouds hung in all morning. Just as well, as last time I did this ride it was hot, and even today I was pretty warm from the effort. This is the Sam's playground - a wide variety of road surfaces from fresh pavement to washboard packed dirt to loose, fresh dirt as I passed a grader getting a road ready for winter. Gearing is 11-32 in back and 28-42 in front, and I used every gear.

Maine - the way life ought to be!

They both turn to beautiful reds! It’s especially mesmerizing when they cover the floor of a spruce and jack pine forest, incredible contrast.

Forgot to mention that pic was snapped from the saddle of my (new to me) Sam.

Great photos and reports everyone!  I Had a great fall ride up Left Hand Canyon to Ward, CO last weekend, one of Boulder’s classics! The colors were vibrant - I brought my Canon AE-1 to capture a bit of it on some 3M Colorprint II film. Grateful for a good climb, a solid lunch at the top in Ward, and a wonderful journey back down on my Atlantis. Couldn’t have asked for a better day!

Early fall ride.  Colours just starting to emerge.  My senses were more tuned into sound on this morning's ride.  When I started there was no wind at all, and almost no cars (Sunday, 7am).  I was riding along and just about to climb, I pulled on the DT shifter and heard that lovely ratchet sound, followed by a smooth shift and then I powered over a short climb, feeling propelled by that feeling of being in the moment, smirking at how awesome riding a bike can be.  A little later the wind picked up, on my way home, thankfully, and the crips leaves were very loud under my tires.  Later I rode some doubletrack and the wet leaves and rocks/roots underneath gave some other senses: the smell of the decaying leaves, the vibration from the terrain, the branches and leaves in the canopy above jostling with the much stronger winds.  I was a bit laboured towards the end of the ride and my breathing was most noticeable.  All good though :-)

Owen - That's an Atlantis I have, rides great with the drops, though I do often think about throwing some albatross bars on to see how it feels - we'll see! I've never taken the train there, if I am ever up that way, I just ride the path which is right next door for the same views.

John - The front bag on the bike is actually a homemade bag, but it's modeled off of the Ron's Bike's small Fab's chest. Frame bag is also homemade, but the rear bag is a Swift Industries Zeitgeist bag.

Thanks,
Bill

Went to church today. Holy Hill Basilica. Perfectly clear skies, chilly at the start (my computer recorded 0 C) but warmed up nicely. SE wind kicked in, making the ride home harder than it needed to be. 100km distance, 824m elevation gain, and beautiful the whole way around. Colors are muted so far, but every now and then you get some spectacular maples. Some of the worst roads around Holy Hill have been repaved, so the 48mm tires on Great Lakes Sam are a bit of overkill. The roads around Holy Hill all look like this. All up and down, 5-15% grade.

Yesterday, I went to the Willapa Hills Trailhead at Pe Ell in Washington state for a group ride to Frances and back, a mileage of 28 miles.

First off, I want to tell you that my camera, a Canon PowerShot SX710 HS did not pick up very well all the fall colors as I had anticipated,  unfortunately. The few pictures I took from my cellphone were a lot better color wise.

I left my house at 8:15 am yesterday. When I got to the small town of Rainier, I realized that I forgot my shoes that I ride with. Therefore, I had to turn around and go back home and get them. This set me back in my travel to Pe Ell in meeting the slower group of cyclists at 10:00 am. Oh well.

Upon arriving at the Pe Ell trailhead, I met once again a man by the name of Steve, who I had sold some bicycle parts from the IBOB Google Group. He said that he was watching out for me to arrive here. He was late to the party as well living far away from the WHT. He was all smiles and happy to ride his bike with me.

We rode together for quite a while, perhaps three miles or so. Then he departed and went ahead to Frances. I slowed him down frequently with intermittently stopping and taking pictures of the scenery, for I had not been there before. He started at Adna, 23 miles east of where we were. He was on a time schedule per say, of which I understood.

Those tree tunnels along the WHT and Chehalis river were amazing !  I loved them.

After Steve left, I kept riding west. After a while, I started to feel tired. I stopped three or four times to rest. Occasionally, cyclists riding back from Frances would pass me going east. I took pictures of their approach. The last group I saw, Chris Brewer, the trail host and promoter passed me and said, "Beautiful day !". I replied, "Amen!"

I was somewhat sad that I did not make it to Pluvius. (The highest point between Chehalis and South Bend at the crest of a divide southeast of South Bend in east central Pacific County is called Pluvius. W. C. Albee, when superintendent of South Bend branch of Northern Pacific Railway, devised the name because of the heavy rainfall in the region. The name is an alteration of the Latin word Pluviosus which has the significance of heavy rains or precipitation. The writers of the Railroad List noted that the name was given “…due to the fact that it rained incessantly during the construction of the line.”)  It was best to listen to my body than not to turn around.

I do not know specifically how many miles I rode yesterday. I am guessing about 10 miles out and back. ... 20 miles total ?  There were no crossroads to take notice of to remember where I turned around.  I do know this I could tell physically that pushed myself to my physical limit when I got home. My legs were physically sore and walked like an old duck bent over trying to straighten up.  All in all, I had a good ride.

Oh !... Those SimWorks Homage 27.5x55mm (actually they measure 50mm) new tires I bought; they came the day before I the WHT ride. I am very happy that they did. They worked very well and were very comfortable to ride on; quite plush. There were areas of gravel that were thick. I love these tires. I wish I had a second pair of wheels to change out when needed, maybe in the near future.

I will be back next spring to pick up where I left off riding west.

Kim Hetzel.

P'tit Train du Nord Linear Park, Quebec.jpeg

Last weekend we enjoyed a sunny and slightly chilly 30 km ride of the 250 km P'tit Train du Nord Linear Park, near St-Sauveur-des-Monts, Quebec.  Stopped in Montreal to visit the friendly folks at C & L Cycles, first met at the Philly Bike Expo.
The food in Quebec is so very good!

Eight of us (four riding Rivendells) traveled from Virginia and Maryland to Pa. to enjoy the D&L (Delaware & Lehigh Rivers) Canal Trail system over four beautiful autumn days. Temps dropped to 34 degrees the first night of camping, but we were prepared, despite 42 degrees being predicted. Good practice for winter bikepacking. We hired a shuttle to take us from Bristol. Pa. up to near White Haven, Pa. for the 156 miles we traveled back. So much history in this neighborhood, including Washington Crossing, Pa. This is my Sam at Buttermilk Falls above the Lehigh Gorge State Park. My full trip album is on Flickr: https://www.flickr.com/photos/bikecrazy-paul/albums/72177720321172192/

It's hard to beat October in the Midwest, and it's my favorite time of year in Central Indiana. Parke County is home to 31 covered bridges and hosts the Covered Bridge Festival, a harvest festival of sorts, located in several different towns connected by meandering gravel roads and, of course, the bridges. I'm not much for crowds of people, so I went out for a ride; 90% gravel roads, 9 bridges over 3 hours. I met back up with the fam afterward for some festival foods. It was a good time. I didn't do the best job capturing the ride, but here are a few shots.

Thank you for the kind comments John. Not stopping to get more photos of that covered bridge on our last day is one of my biggest regrets from the trip. Look closely and you will see the actual trail went under the bridge. Since I was buried in the group of eight riders, and we were on a tight schedule that day, I did not want to ask the others to stop, especially since we had already encountered a number of unexpected detours and closures.
Interior photos would have been a nice addition to my Flickr album for sure.
As it stands, I am not certain if the bridge was actually in use or for "show". Being (wealthy) Bucks County, Pa. it did look to be  well cared for anyway.
One reason I prefer to tour with a smaller group (two-to-three riders, instead of eight) is it is sometimes easier to make such short diversions possible.
Fortunately enough, the area is so full of such historic sites, I was not too deprived.

Evening ride out to one of the largest city parks in the US, Eagle Creek Park, and Reservoir, for sunset at the beach. ~35-mile mix of bike paths, streets, off-road cuts, and industrial gravel. The Surly ECR nearly makes the Gus look like a 26" bike.

I can offer a seasonal photo with a Riv in it this time, first ride on a new-to-me Susie/Wolbis! The flip side of having this new steed is that the Bombadil is stripped down to a frame, as most of these parts came from it and I don't have room to have both built up at the same time. Not sure the long term plan, but this was available locally for a bargain so I had to try the Hillibike lifestyle.

It's spring here in Australia, but I'll share a photo nonetheless:

Taking my Appaloosa for some Wandring at my ol' uni campus.
This is Urrbrae House (1889), a former residence that was bequeathed along with its estate to the University of Adelaide.
The building at the end of the avenue of trees is one of the older uni buildings (though it's much newer than the house).

Iowa County, Wisconsin. I live in the beautiful Driftless area of southwestern Wisconsin-this image is from one of my favorite roads in the area. We have had a below average color season, probably as a result of eight weeks of beautiful weather (but too warm and dry to produce good color). I have had to seek out pockets of color, and the riding has been fantastic.

Hey Dustin and Brian,

Nothing too exciting as far as how the dents formed! The former owner told me he had it repainted orange and then pretty soon after it fell on his lawn mower in the garage 😬. The two dents were shallow, but for peace of mind I had them filled at the local frame builder - Rodriguez Cycles. While they were at it, I had them add a fender mount to the chain stay bridge. You can see the dent fills a bit better in the photo below. I think they came out pretty sweet and I don't really have any intention of repainting it! I just masked those portions and sprayed it with clear enamel.

Its been a sweet ride! Handles the woody trails around here with ease, and is zippy on the road. I had just enough room to clear 43mm knobby Bruce Gordon tires with SKS fenders. I had an Atlantis (2) serving the purpose of this bike for the last couple years, but it was a bit too small. I've been on the hunt for another larger one (61 cm),  and when this popped on my radar I snagged it! Fits much better.

A little family business trip to Cape Cod. I bought this Fuji America in 1980, to replace the Fuji S10-S that I folded in half on the front left fender of a Volvo wagon. The America met a similar fate soon after, though just the fork was bent. The frame had some stress cracks in the paint but was straight. I replaced it with a Holdsworth Special and fell under the spell of Reynolds 531. I put a replacement fork on the Fuji, plus the parts from the S10-S, and gave it to my father, who put it in his garage on Cape Cod and never rode it. That's where it acquired its, uh, patina. Eventually I started riding it, then put some 650B wheels and long-reach brakes on it, then I found an original fork on e-Bay. Last night I put the bar-end shifters back on it. It's a lovely bike to ride, very smooth and stable. VERY low trail. The chain stay indentations line up perfectly with 584-42 tires (I'm running 38), making me think that Fuji's designers started with a 650B design and threw 700C on there for the American market.

Cape Cod after Labor Day is a special place. It being Sunday I saw more traffic on the CCRT than on the roads. Always fun to see a cranberry harvest in progress.
