Jeff, I know you want a complete ... but I see that Blue Lug as a 59 Mustard Clem H F/F/H/BB for US $1270.25.  They do ship internationally.

Interesting that blue lug would sell it for $1270 USD.   Weren’t most Clem framesets in the $900 range?

Thanks Tom, I actually contacted Bluelug about that exact frame earlier this week and they said they don’t ship frames/bikes because of the shipping damage risk. Then I checked the exchange rate and thought “I like mustard, but not THAT much”. The search continues...

Just be patient. Having bought and sold two 59cm Clem Hs, they seem to go for about $900 complete or about half that for the frameset. They don’t hold their value especially well, and they’re out there.

Thanks Eric, I plan to hold out for something popping up on the used market - I’m guessing about the time those hillibikes start shipping. What made you sell the two H’s?

My first Clem was the mustard yellow, a color I really love. But I didn’t love the stock build at all, and after a busy summer of bike stuff, I didn’t have any energy to rebuild it:

Clem 2 was a green frameset from eBay. I sold it in a fit of downsizing, thinking that my Jones can do everything the Clem can, and I like the way the Jones handles better. But in the end, I wanted to keep my Jones set up for mountain biking, and I used my Dahon for errand running in place of the Clem. Which works surprisingly well.

Eric, what Dahon model do you ride and how did you modify it for your particular uses?

I bought an old, beat up Speed 7 from ebay during a boring moment in last year's Superbowl (there were many IIRC). New tires (Tioga Powerblocks) really transformed it from a drag to ride into something fun. Then new brakes, fenders, seat, front rack, handlebars, etc.

I just picked up a used Bike Friday Silk, but so far I prefer my Dahon. It feels quite a bit livelier. Maybe due to the internal gear hub in the BF. Anyway, I currently have a bunch more Dahon hop up parts in my Aliexpress cart that I'm thinking about (new stempost, handlebar clamp, wheels, etc). It's a fun bike.

You can see it here:

Interesting comparison between BF and Dahon -- not that I know Fridays, but I've always thought of them as "real" bikes, and thought Dahons suffer all sorts of compromises because of their folding design and price points. While my Dahon Hon Solo -- an upper-end chromo limited edition model -- is decent and, after many modifications, is pleasant to ride, it certainly does not feel lively compared to my "real" bikes.

That said, I also have never found my Dahon darty or awkward in handling -- I've used 30 mm-or-so Kojaks and, presently, 40 mm-or-so PowerBands (the PBs are nicer. Am I right in thinking that these are simply variations on the Power Block?). It handles like a non-optimum road bike and, in fact, the sluggishness that I feel compared to my Rivs and Matthews has to do with pedaling effort. (Again, the PowerBands roll a bit better than the Kojaks, and those rolled a lot better than the horrible OEM Marathon Racers. And, note, that my drivetrain (obviously) is ss fixed; no great weight in the rear.

Question: Do you other Dahon owners find that it is hard to adjust the main boom-tube hinge perfectly, and once adjusted, keep it that way? Even when I adjust it frighteningly tight and locktite the adjustment nut, the hinge always develops at least a wee bit of play after a few miles. Is this tiny "wiggle" play normal for Dahons?

Patrick Moore, who has considered having a frame builder weld the frame joint in place permanently ... (but who, instead of doing that, should invest in VO's new small-wheel frame).

Yes the play is normal. I don't know the mechanics of all this, but I've heard stories of people adjusting it too tight and breaking stuff in there. You want it snug enough that the frame itself isn't actually moving around, but not hurting your hand to close it.

Well, perfectionist that I am, at least I know that this imperfection is shared by others; what do they call that vice ... a form of envy?

I should back off the tension in the hinge; in fact, will go it now before I forget.

Thanks.
