Just a thought: Building up that 2003 Curt Goodrich 26"-wheel custom as a Rivendell cruiser ...?

I had offered it for sale, but I've often thought that it would be nice to have a "hop on and go" "sit up and beg" cruiser bike, and while sure, it would be nice to own a Clem for this sort of riding, I've got a Riv custom frameset hanging on the wall.

Here're the rest of my thoughts. It was built for caliper brakes, but I could build it with a fixed drive train, thus eliminating the need for a rear brake, or I could use a coaster brake rear wheel -- or drum rear wheel, for that matter. For the front, I could have the wheel built with a drum brake, or even find a pair of those very elusive clamp-on cantilever brake bosses.

Without constraints of calipers I am pretty sure I could get a 42 in there, thus RH Naches Passes or 1.75 Paselas. No fenders, though, which would be a major point "contra."

B 67 saddle, Albastache or perhaps Bullmoose or even Surly Open without rise on longer-reach stem.

The frameset has f and r racks and lighting wire guides.

Handling would be affected, but the more upright position's effect on it might be moderated by using a bar like the Albastache that offers a "bend-forward" position. (IIRC, sta = 73*, hta = 72.5*, don't know rake or trail, but guess it's medium trail. 58 X 57 c-c but with what, 3*? upsloping tt and high head.

What do y'all think?

Really, the absence of fenders is the principal argument against the idea.

What about adding canti posts and touching up? Maybe you'd get 26"x1.6 Supremes or something along those lines?

The Clem would offer more flexibility, but might not have the handling characteristics you prefer.

I don't think that I'd bother with the cost and complication of canti bosses and a new powdercoat, A front drum brake would require a new wheel, but then I'd have to get a new wheelset anyway.

As I think about it, I wonder if there is sufficient crown-to-dropout distance for 42s; will have to try this once get the Chauncey replacement back, as that one has the 1.75 front Pasela wheel on it.
