The SS SANTA MERCEDES (WHBH) had a second life as the TS PATRIOT STATE (WHBH) at Mass Maritime Academy until 1998 when corrosion under the reduction gears required it to be taken out of service.  We had to memorize the ship's call sign as part of our cadet knowledge.

I sailed on her for four trips and was on her last underway period under her own power.

Incidentally she was also one of only two ship's I've ever sailed on which had a radio officer billet.  I only visited the radio room once as it was generally off limits to cadets.

I can remember back in the 70s that one op at KOK would send the
station's callsign as a single character:
dah-dit-dah-dah-dah-dah-dah-dit-dah.

Kind of like SOS sent with K's instead of S's.

Different stations wanted their call signs to be sent in specific ways.  Jack Dale, WB2TIU, owner and manager of West Creek, New Jersey Radio called me into his office and told me I should always send the "C" in WSC with extra long dashes. I guess WCC dragged their dashes in "CC", so to attract the attention of radio officers we were to mimic them in that way.

Jack Dale and a group of investors including Walter J. Kane, III (a former WCC and NMF operator) restarted WSC after RCA shut it down and ITT/Mackay had shut down their New York station WSL in the middle 1980s.  Doug Losty, WA1TUT started West Haven, CT Radio WKM about the same time. Eventually WLO Mobile Radio purchase the WSC and KLB in Seattle from Craig Jobest, W7ZFZ.

Thanks for that WSC info0rmation DR.  With your permission I'd like to add it to our Web page on the station.  The photos at the link below show WSC during RCA ownership and also photos of the restarted station that I took during my visit.
