According to Alfredo De Cristofaro's latest research the radio room below belonged to a cargo ship or a research vessel on duty for Russian Navy, I have investigated the callsign RMKD and it is a Navy callsign and this type of call could be assigned to Navy ships or civilian vessels affiliated or on duty for the Navy, I suppose this ship now is dead but I never found the ship's name. So I re-post the photo to have any possible help to find which was the ship.

Nice radio room - this does not look like Navy at all. :)

You probably have received the answer already here:

But others might be interested to know, as well:

Call sign RMKD = NIS Akademik Kurchatov (USSR)
Year of construction: 1971 (?)
Owner: USSR Academy of Sciences / Institute of Oceanology
Port of registry: Leningrad Type

I always heard the Russians would tape the qso and slow it down to actually copy the message.  I'm amused by that when noticing the tape recorder prominently positioned in the Radio Room.

I worked many Soviet era ships, they all would work as fast as you could. I was impressed with their high speed proficiency. If there was another op around we would double team the Russians so we could QRQ.

What is the large piece of equipment behind his left shoulder?
