Can't play video locally on 64GB Raspi install.

Hey all,

I have a 64GB Raspi install I am sending to a very small school in the Philippines, I also installed GCompris and some other things. Anyway, playing videos doesn't work locally on any of the browsers, it just comes up as a black square on the screen. Has anyone run into this, maybe somebody has some ideas?

I think there is a new html5 web browser you can use.  Alternatively, if that comes up empty, search 'media-berry' in the google group.  There's some attachments there someone posted to help with videos (text below):

Hi all, 

If any of you are using media-berry for Raspberry Pi clients that 
enhance the use of Khan Academy videos. Specifically, subtitle display 
and defense against double-click. The way I have done subtitle support 
would be obnoxious to general users. 

All three of the files are required for subtitle support, but only 
server.py is required for defense against double-click problems. To 
install these mods, replace the existing server.py and omxplayer.sh in 
/opt/media-berry/server. Rename the file replace_video.user.txt to 
replace_video.user.js and replace the existing version of that file in 
/opt/media-berry/userscript and also in 
/home/pi/.local/share/midori/scripts (and any other user you might have 
installed for). 

At present these modules look for English subtitles, but if you want to 
look for a different language, edit replace_video.user.js and search for 
"en" (including the quotes). For instance if you wanted Spanish, you 
would change that to "es" (including the quotes). 

If you use this and subtitles are too small or too large, edit the 
font-size in omxplayer.sh. I have optimized it for the Hanns G monitors 
that Powering Potential uses in Tanzania. 

When using the subtitle support, hitting "s" (without the quotes) will 
toggle the subtitles off and on. 

The double-click problem was reported by a user of Rachel. (Thank you 
Jeremy for passing that along.) In the original media-berry package, if 
the user double-clicks the video play button, two copies of the video 
start, and one cannot be controlled by key strokes. With my mod in 
server.py, only one copy of the video starts and keystrokes continue to 
work. 

Even though server.py has subtitle support, if the other two modules are 
not installed, that subtitle support has no effect (good or bad).

Thank you for your quick reply, I really appreciate it. I installed epiphany with no luck, the video comes up as one big black square, clicking it doesn't change anything. I doesn't matter what browser I use, if I am logged in or not. I have had ka lite (videos and exercises) running on a different 8GB SD card on this same Pi. I don't have media-berry so it's not that. I tried youtube.com and KhanAcademy.org, youtube just complained about not having flash, Khanacademy.org actually looked like it was going to work (it showed the red youtube box with the triangle in the middle), but when I clicked to play the CPU just churned for a few minutes then went back too idle.

On an unrelated note, my installation connects on 127.0.0.1:7007 (8008 doesn't work) I am not sure if that is a helpful piece of info or not.

Before I obliterate the KA-Lite install and just go for Khan on a Stick:
Has anyone else used a 64GB SD Card (Sandisk) on a Raspi B+ V1.2 with the 64 GB image and been able to use KALite from the device itself (not over the network)? Is there any settings I might be missing for the raspi overall?

I never got a response from this so I thought I would update so people wouldn't get the wrong idea (that the system is broken). 

It seems like everything works well if you are networked to the PI from some computer with a modern browser/flash installed!

If you are using the PI itself to view the content it is possible to use RACHEL with some caveats:

• The typing tutor sort of works locally if you install gnash for flash emulation, the piano tutor wasn't quite usable.
  
• Video works if configure omxplayer correctly, but you have to download the videos. I got epiphany to work also but I am not sure how, it definitely was NOT working for a while also  so be ready for some frustration.
  
• Scratch works perfectly! Sounds play well, animation is flawless, my five year could play this for days. I have spent a few hours on it myself.
  
• Gcompris works well enough but is definitely slower than on a PC, this isn't installed by default but is a good tool to let kids explore.

I would love to hear about what else people are putting on their installations. Even though we have now shipped the machine I was dealing with, we will be sending more.
