Hello  All 2+2 1800i Zetec owners...
A recently new addition to our family for me; keeping my Xtreme company...
This car hasn't been used regularly for a long time
Initially the engine ran at normal temp; then on a warm day I noticed the temp rising and not stopping. The fan hadn't kicked in as I would have thought.
The fan works hard wired and now works when the engine is running hot.
What would cause the temp to rise; are there any common weak points?
Is it the water pump or ?
Thanks
Mark

I’ll plump for the stat. They don’t seem to last long these days...

Forgot to say this is a silver top, with the stubby oil filter sticking out horizontally.
I need to locate the stat.
I'm used to the other one with the oil filter angled down...

It's in the brown/black plastic housing that the top rad hose connects to.
Just undo the 3 bolts around the hose.
It's a changeover stat (as it opens the outlet to the rad it closes the
outlet to the bypass circuit) so don't just remove it.

It’s at the opposite end to the alternator drive belts etc, with the large hose to the radiator and a couple of small hoses for heater and bypass, if it’s standard stat housing

When you strip it or remove hoses be extra careful as when a few years old they become extremely brittle, I’ve broken two and was fully aware of what they were like. You buy the stat complete with the housing, the last I bought was advertised as for a focus, very few listed as fiesta or escort, only difficulty was fitting the sensors as all the holes are blanked off.

Not my day today... Taking care to remove the plastic housing, the bolts would move... Tried a little harder on one and... It sheared off!
Does anyone have a replacement ally housing that is connected to the plastic housing?
Mind you that said those bolts seemed very tight as well...
Looks like the plastic housing is available at my local motor factor.
I've attached a photo to help...
Cheers

That must be a very early Zetec, or somebody fitted a early stat housing.
Only the very first ones had the main housing in alloy, then it was switched to the same brown/black plastic as the pipe inlet.

I'm surprised there aren't any plastic ones on Ebay, but they all seem to be the later Zetec ones with the push in fittings for the temperature sensor.

Did a bit more research and as Bill said, it seems all the plastic ones have been self destructing.
I guess that's why people are after £85 on ebay for scruffy alloy ones.

It seems it would be worth getting the shear off bolt(s) removed and reusing the alloy housing.

When I was searching for one there were plenty of the later type with even the push in sensor ports blanked off, the only “old style” housings were second hand in plastic, so 20year old plus, and at silly prices, I finally bought the later type with blanked off ports for about £10 and fitted the sensors in hose joints down steam from the stat.

Update, the engine is running at a controlled temp now, not changed the stat... Yet.
The fan is working now which wasn't before.
Would I be right in thinking the fan is compensating for the stat as it seems to be on once the engine is hot?
My radiator will need replacing soon, you'll see in my previous photo...
Cheers

When you turn the fan by hand, does it go around in fits and starts? Mine
did so I fitted a new one from car builders solutions. Sooo much better.

The test drive when the temp guage reading wasnt too hot and stayed there consistently, the ambient air temp was around 16 degrees.
Next drive the air temp was at least 5 degrees hotter. The stability didn't stay for long and the guage started to kreep up to the red...
Then my son noticed water dripped in the passenger foot well. Not much, then I noticed the temp recovered to the previous level.
Are zetecs prone to airlocks, I noticed I had to top up a litre of coolant?
I recognise I need to change the stat but that will be major as not one bolt will undo normally I'll try freezing the bolts to see if that will help free the bolts.
Cheers
Mark

Water in the foot wells is usually a sign the heater matrix has split.
It can be a pain to do, but not too bad in the the 2+2 compared to the
Xtreme.  Before changing the matrix I would check that the foot wells
are getting damp from coolant.

The plastic clips on the bottom cover that need to be released before
you can get to the matrix will snap - Ford found this out and have metal
clips that will hold the lower cover in place. A quick Google search
hasn't provided a part number, but I do have some in the garage,
complete with Ford packet, so I should be able to find this, if required.

Check all hoses are still tight as it may not be the matrix and simply a
slightly loose hose.

Regards,
Steve

Refined my Google search and found a link:

http://www.fordopedia.org/parts-catalog/finis/1656530

Or part number 3 in this diagram:

http://www.fordopedia.org/parts-catalog/fiesta-mk1/A4.43

I'm not sure if these are available any more but your local Ford part
department should be able to search for them.

Regards,
Steve
