We thought we’d have a drive out to the coast today with the weather being so nice, anyway, we were just a few hundred yards from our destination when woman behind us decided to put the pedal to the floor, I heard the high revs of her fiesta and just had time to look in the mirror to see her inches away before the sickening crash of the impact. We were only at a fast walking pace when she hit, the force of the crash sent us into the back of a RAV4 which didn’t look too bad but apparently has some damage. My H4 will be a write off, the back end is smashed and the body has a good split from the rear window, down the wheel arch, under the car along the floor, to the other side, the front too is badly smashed with the bonnet pushed up and the bumper pushed down.
Luckily everyone has walked away in one piece but we’ve a bit of neck pain already.
I’ll have to contact insurance company tomorrow to see what happens next.

Hi Bill,

So sorry to hear what has happened.Glad you were OK and best wishes for full recovery.

I too was out in a kit car today to enjoy the weather. (this time my Blackjack Avion 3 wheeler - no windscreen or roof) It could happen to any of us, any day.

On the plus side sounds like the car did it’s job and took the punishment for you. Lots of choices ahead? Good luck with the insurance folk. I recently discovered they are not all bad. Some quite helpful.

Bill,
Sorry to hear about the accident, but at least everyone has minimal
personal injury.

As Rob has said, the H4 can take substantial impacts and be repaired. The
front doesn't look too bad and hopefully the chassis isn't damaged. The
rear has quite a distance before the chassis, so even though the fibre
glass has cracked Rob is more than capable of repairing that. Remember this
in mind if you want to keep the car and don't let the insurance company
write the car off without a fight.

Regards,
Steve

Thanks for the good wishes everyone, I’ve been out looking around at the damage, both headlights have fell out with the surrounds being ripped off with their tie bar, the front fibreglass cross brace is broken along with the radiator surrounds
I’m not sure whether the fuel tank has been pushed forward but the filler cap/pipe isn’t sat square anymore, the car needs a very careful looking over, as usual it will be the lesser looking parts that push the bill beyond economic repair

The pictures don’t show the damage to anywhere near it’s true extent, when you see it in the flesh though it looks pretty grim, I’d agree it would be repairable but it’s whether the insurance companies would allow it to be done

Oh no! Glad there doesn't appear to be major injury, but maybe get the necks
looked at? Whiplast seems to be the 'go to' injury amonst those seeking
compo, which unfortunately puts a bad vibe on the genuine claimants. My
sister slipped and fell a few years ago and had severe whiplast pain for a
couple of years - sorted eventually by acupuncture!
Re the car - nothing that Jim couldn't sort out!

Hi Bill,
Very sorry to hear about the car.

The body on the H4 isn’t structural like it is on the Saloon and H4 and as a result it’s a lot thinner.
Having reverse engineered (taken the body and chassis apart) a H4 recently, i was surprised at how few places the body is fixed to the chassis, and the chassis doesn’t extended past the rear suspension beam and shock mounts.
So I’m not surprised the rear crumpled like that.
But, as others have said, it is repairable.

Since it was a 3rd party accident it won’t matter if the 3rd party insurance company write it off.
They shouldn’t ask for the car, they will just pay out the market value and you can decide if you want to repair it or not.

Even if the claim goes through your insurance first they will normally offer you the salvage for a scrap value.

One thing though, if you do want to consider repairing it (or even selling it as is) then get the car back straight away, i assume it’s been recovered to a storage depot at the moment.
You should be able to reclaim the cost of the recovery back to your house from the 3rd party insurance company, i have done in the past.
Once the car disappears into the insurance company storage system it will be much harder to get back, and extra or water damage is likely to occur.

That’s from past personal experience anyway.

Jim

Thanks Jim, I was very surprised at the amount of damage, others I’ve seen seem to have come off must less damaged. I have got the car back at my home address it’s now sat on the drive looking very sad, but at least it’s under my control
The insurance companies are involved now so we’ll have to see what they decide.

Get someone who knows the car to look at it, not just a grease monkey.

I bet Rob would collect it from you........

If it is repairable, but the insurance want to write it off (’cos they are a tight bunch), then buy it off them for “spares” and get Rob to fix it.

Once repaired it would only need an engineers report to get it back on the road.

It’s been two weeks since the accident and we’ve had an offer for the car, I’ll be keeping the salvage so if anyone is interested in car or any parts feel free to drop me a line, could be a couple of weeks before I can release things.
