If I have one window open (C:\) and use QAP menu to open a second with a different location (D:\) the first is replaced leaving one window open (D:\), although a 2nd window will open if the 1st is minimized. Minimized or not once a location is open (say C:\) QAP menu will not open a second instance of that location. There are workaround's such as 1. open C:\ and minimize. 2.open D:\. 3. with D:\ open use menu to open C:\. The result is two C:\ windows open. But is there a way to open 2nd, 3rd, etc. instances of the same location? What have I missed?

Hi Ken,

Not sure if I get you right but there is one principle with QAP: if you open the popup menu by clicking inside an existing Explorer window and select a folder, it will be open inside the current Explorer window. Same thing will happen if you click inside a file dialog box.

If you click to open the popup menu anywhere else (on your desktop, on the task bar, on any other app window, etc.) and select a folder, this folder will be open in a new Explorer window.

Hi Jean,

I just ran a test... and I confirm Ken's says.
Issue is not related to the fact that one is on disk C: and the other on
disk D:. Same issue even if two are on the same disk.
And behaviour is not exactly as you describe it.

Actually, if you have an explorer window curently open on a given
directory, and if FROM OUTSIDE this window you use QAP to open a second
time the same directory, then QAP does NOT open a new explorer window,
but set the focus to the already opened one (and if it is minimized,
de-minimize it).

On the other hand, if from INSIDE an explorer window opened on directory
B you use QAP to open a directory A already displayed (minimized or not)
in ANOTHER window, then the window from which you activate QAP switches
to the directory A.
And this is the ONLY way (in QAP) to open two explorer windows on the
same directory :
- Open once the target directory
- from outside this window use QAP to open any other directory
- from inside the new window, use QAP to switch to the desired window.

I don't kno if it is a bug, or desired behaviour, but it's is slightly
different from what you describe.

Regards
Laurent

Actually, this is maybe not "due to QAP", but "standard behaviour" of
Windows.
I explain : In an explorer window is currectly opened on directory X,
the using Windows+R key (or start menu + execute) I set this directory
as "target" of execute, it does NOT open a new window, but set the focus
on already opened one, while if i "execute" another directory, it opens
a new window...

Exactly what QAP does if used from OUTSIDE an existing explorer window....

I just wanted to add ....my question arises from my habit of opening new explorer windows by right-clicking on a  file explorer icon pined to the task bar. This procedure allows for opening multiple windows in what ever combination one wants. I think QAP is an excellent program and I am trying to use it to replace as much as possible in my usual computer avtivity. Maybe this is just going to far, and after all, the task bar is till there to use.

Hi Ken and Laurent,

I read your posts and I'm taking some time before replying because I'm currently working on a new feature for users with multi-monitor system (opening the Explorer window on the active window) that will slightly change the way Explorer windows are open.  I'll be back on this Tomorrow (or in the next days).

In the mean time, I would like to mention that there is an "Alternative menu" command that allows to open the folder in a new Explorer window, regardless of where you clicked and of the Explorer windows already open. And there is a convenient shortcut: Shift + click on a folder in the QAP menu to open this folder in a new Explorer window. More info here: https://www.quickaccesspopup.com/what-are-the-power-menu-features/

Hi Jean,

thank you for your answer.
"Shift+click on a folder in the QAP menu" is the perfect answer to the
mentioned "issue" (which actually is not really an issue....)

Thanks and regards
Laurent

I read your posts and I'm taking some time before replying because I'm currently working on a new feature for users with multi-monitor system (opening the Explorer window on the active window) that will slightly change the way Explorer windows are open.  I'll be back on this Tomorrow (or in the next days).

This is a long time due follow-up on this thread about changes in the way QAP opens the Explorer windows since v9.4. If you enable the new option On a multi-monitor system, always open the Explorer window on the active monitor found in OptionsFile managers tab, under Selected File Manager: Windows Explorer, the new folder will always be open in a new Explorer window and this window will be positioned at the center of the active monitor (the active monitor is where the QAP menu was open). This applies even if the system has only one monitor. But this does not apply to users who selected Directory Opus or Total Commander as default file manager.

If you keep the default setting (leave the checkbox unchecked), nothing will change in the way QAP handle Explorer windows. New windows will be open where Windows does it by default (normally at the last location of an Explorer window). And, if a Windows Explorer is already open in a given folder, selecting this folder again in QAP will activate the current Explorer window for this folder instead of opening a new window (except if you use the Alternative menu command Open in a new window). As mentioned earlier, this is the normal behavior of the "Run" Windows command used by QAP.

I made a video about this recently. You can view it here:

OK, thanks, works fine !

But, personnally, I prefer to let this box unchecked (moreover, I have
only one monitor, then no issue relative to active / inactive monitor),
and, as you suggested in a previous answer :

- "shift + click" on menu when I want to force a new window,
- and "simple click" when I want to possibly re-use an existing window.

It's more "flexible" this way.

Many thanks for all
Regards
Laurent
