Hello Joost,

I think the option to create QTVR (.mov files) can be safely deleted
from PTGui. Or is there any known or even possible usage for this?

I don't know, but I wouldn't be surprised if it's still used.

I disagree.

QTVR remains a fast and responsive way to get an effective overview of the panorama's stitching in PTGui.  It allows quick panning and zooming into any part of the image, and is far more responsive than PTGui's Preview function (which only provides very limited zooming).  While PTGui's Detail viewer allows for a wider range of zooming to check details, it's is a painfully slow mechanism to use.

I output a 10,000x5,000 pixel QTVR file of every panorama I stitch in PTGui (from 20,000x10,000 pixel full-resolutions) in order to preview and check details.  This allows me to quickly find stitching errors, lens flares, sensor dust spots, etc. in sufficient detail that might not have been noticed when preparing the source files or using the slow-responding Detail Viewer of the full-res image.  Using this QTVR output, I can much more quickly identify problem areas, and then address them in masking, optimizing, or even re-outputting source image files for PTGui.

Yes, this does require that QuickTime 7 is installed on your computer, and that may be an issue for those who are not running older systems.  But I've avoided recent 64-bit system updates to my Macs because these break all the Adobe CS apps I use (and Microsoft's, too).  Updating to the newer Mac OS means having to switch these apps to the subscription models, where you wind up paying significant (and perpetual) monthly / annual fees for software you may not even be using regularly.

I know I'm a holdout, and will probably need to succumb to these eventually, but in the seven years since Adobe switched to its CC subscription model, I've not had to pay over $4,000 in subscription fees by sticking with my perfectly good CS6 apps (and older Mac OS).

Since I suspect there's not much effort necessary to retain QTVR output as a part of PTGui, why delete it when it still provides value to some users?  If PTGui's Detail Viewer was as responsive as a QTVR movie window, then I'd say QTVR output would be far less necessary.

Thanks,

PTGui comes with a stand alone viewer. Is it not responsive on Mac? On
windows it's way faster than Quicktime.

Hi Erik,

I didn't say the PTGui standalone viewer wasn't responsive on the Mac.  I said it didn't zoom well (it appears to me that clicking the Zoom item in the menu only increases the window to full screen, but doesn't allow you to actually zoom in for better detail).  Also, I'm not sure where this preview file gets stored (if at all).  My experience is that if I want to look at a preview again after I've closed the standalone viewer, I have to regenerate the file again.  With a saved QTVR file, I simply double click that file and it opens quickly in the QuickTime player.

I did say that the Detail Viewer within PTGui is not terribly responsive – both on desktop and laptop Macs.  That's the only reason why I generate a QTVR file – so I can navigate and identify stitching and other problems in the outputted files more quickly.

Scott,

A and Z keys in the PTGui viewer allow you to zoom in and out.

With the mouse wheel or with A key I can zoom far beyond pixel level (Z
zooms out).

You can view the finished panorama.

BTW.: FSPViewer is also available for OS X.

On mac you can also pinch to zoom in the PTGui Viewer.

You can render the panorama at full size (use Create Panorama). Then
press the View button and select 'Open in PTGui Viewer'.

When i first started using PTGui, that Detail Viewer was (and it) just the most incredible thing to me. That you can just preview the stitched result even with multi-shot HDR, optimum seam placement, masking, tonemapping and everything pretty much instantly at any zoom level, live, in proper rectilinear projection.

Of course you do need a proper system with many cores, lots of memory, and a dedicated GPU, but then it is incredibly quick. While there is plenty other software out there that doesn't know how to use half of the power available to it.

Here is a demo. Might convince someone to buy a new system. 😄

I am on an old Macbook Pro mid 2012 w/SSD and the detail viewer and the built-in view work fine. Really...QTVR is so so dead!
My favorite viewer you may want to consider is the LizardQ Viewer https://www.lizardq.com/en/viewer/ for Mac and PC.
I use it for reviewing my images before I upload to 360Cities or Google Street View.
