Hello;

I'm investigating ways to improve my panorama cleanup process, and am curious about the ability to export a panorama from ptGui in a format other than equirectangular. Is it possible to export in cubeMap format?

Many thanks!

Allen, Yes.  Please see the FAQ - item 6.40:  https://www.ptgui.com/support.html#6_40

If you need a larger field of view than 90° you can use my templates:

Hi John;

A follow-on question to this, if I may: if i want to export a single file of 6 cubic map tiles arranged in a strip, is it possible to convert this back into equirectangular format? Or do I need to split the files and subsequently re-stitch them?

Thanks!
—a

p.s. what I am ultimately trying to do is color-correct an HDRI stitched panorama based on a MacBeth chart that I use in my scene. So I need to:
  • load all my bracketed images into ptGui
  • assemble and stitch a non-tonemapped HDRI image in EXR format
  • export it as a latlong image
  • re-import it into ptgui, export it again as 6 faces
  • patch the nadir in Photoshop
  • run the panel containing my macBeth chart through a python script that detects the chart and corrects it
  • correct the remaining panels
  • re-assemble the panels into equirectangular again
  • use the assembled HDR panorama as a light source in a CG scene.

If there are any ways that I can make this process more efficient that I’m unwittingly overlooking (mostly because of ignorance of the extent of ptGUI’s features) please let me know!

The strip format cubic image is not recognised as such on input to PTGui so it won't be automatically converted into the 360x180 format.  It's not actually impossible to do a stitch but you would need to add the image in 6 times and mask the individual cube faces from each.  I haven't tried doing this - very precise  masks would obviously be needed. This could all be done automatically using only one input image (as is done for stitching image pairs from one shot 360 cameras), but I don't imagine there's much demand for such a facility.

Ok thanks, sounds like I should stay away from that export format.

Actually it would be sufficient to do individual cropping, which could
be done with numerical input, but also exact to a single pixel.

Eric, Yes, you are right.  I already realised that it was cropping that was required rather than masking when I revisited the topic this morning.  I had in mind the picture of the one shot camera images with a red mask applied to one half, quite forgetting that it was the crop circle that was doing the extraction.

Hi there;

Following up on this advice: when I try to reconstruct my touched-up cube faces, the panorama seems to assemble itself with the faces incorrectly positioned:

Is this a bug? What’s the way for me to fix this?

Thanks!

Hi Allen,

Could it be you mixed up the images from two panoramas? I don't see how
these cube faces would ever fit together.

Kind regards,

Hi Joost;

I think I figured out what was going on here, and thought I’d pass along my discovery in case it’s interesting to anyone else:

I’m doing my color correction in Natron, and erroneously exported my cube faces as EXRs with a region of definition that differed from the actual resolution of the images themselves (Natron is compositing software, and tends to assume it’s working with images destined for a broadcast format like HD or UHD, and sets RoD to this format unless you tell it otherwise).

Apparently ptGui is confused by this, and seems to be cropping in on the images to compensate (or something…I dunno). So, the image faces are actually in the correct place, but are being cropped/distorted incorrectly. Fixing this RoD/resolution discrepancy fixes things for me!

Thanks!
