Ideas of what to do if ptgui doesn´t align a panorama correct (although it was photographed correct)?

Hi,

I usally photograph 4 x 3 or 5 photos and they can be stitched with with auto aligning images perfectly and i don´t have to do anything manually.

But i sometimes have panoramas that cannot be stitched / get stitched totally crazy. Usally that that happens in meeting rooms with a lot of repeating elements or oftenly in a ceiling with holes.
Just "deleting worst control"-buttons doesn´t delete anything, and gerenrating more control points only generates more wrong points.

Mostly it is not so easy to change control points manual, because
- i don´t always see which control points should be deleted.
- just adding 3 or 4 control points per image isn´t enough.

What are the tricks to get the panorama stitched in this situation.
I sometimes but not very often had luck with
- restart computer and try it again.
- Change direction of the images. Load in last bracket fist and then the other brackets
- Load only one bracket of each photo into ptgui

- Make the hdr process in lightroom 5 bracketed raws to jpg, and then load only 4 pictures into ptgui (only tried some days ago one time but it worked).

What do you do in this situation?

You should find this situation arises less frequently with V11. However, with only four camera positions to deal with, do the following:

1. Delete all control points.
2. Reset lens parameters to sane values.
3. Mask parts of the tripod that appear in the images.
4. Position the images approximately where they should be, using either Fill Yaw, or a template, or Align to Grid, or dragging in the Panorama Editor window.
5. Generate control points between pairs of ev0 images e.g. 0-3, 3-6, 6-9, 9-0. (I assume a tripod is used, so the linked images can be ignored).
6. Optimize.
7. Delete worst points and optimize again.

It's rare for that not to generate a decent panorama.

Thanks John.
What should i do when in step 5 the automatic doesn´t find control points? How many control points should i set manual then or what can i do.
If i set 3 or 4 control points only, the opimizer wants to re-initialize.

Here is an example of what i am talking about. I reduced to one bracket and made the images smaller for you:

Hi Florian,

Adding 4 control point pairs should be fine. And it's good to let PTGui
initialize and optimize. You also may need to go to the optimizer tab
and set 'Optimize lens distortion: Heavy + lens shift'. Switch PTGui to
Advanced mode.

But much easier: use PTGui 11, it handles this panorama perfectly.

By the way, which lens is this? The Canon 8-15 with a Metabones adapter
on Sony?

Kind regards,

Could I have one original image (raw or jpg) straight from the camera?
So I can make PTGui recognize the lens automatically.

Hi Florian ! I played with your files and managed to get a minimum of CP of 1.4 !!! I only manually deleted the highest (1.8, I think) CP, but didn't add any others ! I added some vertical CP (just for the sake of it... I don't think they're even useful) !

Check the *.pts file ! I modified the PTGui choice of LENS and focal length, plus the crop diameter and position !

The stitching is PERFECT, now ! I haven't seen one single stitching error ! Work time: 5 minutes !

Have fun !
