Hi all,

I am experiencing distorted alignment issue with the panorama photos that I took with my Mavic 3. Thus, I need to "manually" align horizontal and vertical axis and this takes a few minutes to get it right.

On the contrast, once I tested with the same photos and settings on Macbook Pro 16 M2 there were no issues. Panorama file was automatically aligned and there was no further manual process involved. (Please see the attached)

I wonder if this is a common problem with Windows machines. Is there a way to fix this issue on my Dell XPS 15 9500?

Here's my laptop specs:
Windows 11 Home (64bit)
Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-10875H CPU @ 2.30GHz   2.30 GHz
Ram 64.0GB
Graphics: Intel UHD Graphics / Nvidia GeForce GTX 1650 Ti

Greatly appreciate everyone's help.

Thanks in advance.

I assume you use the same PTGui version on both computers. So it must be
the settings. Check Project Settings tab and Tools->Options. If this
doesn't help, please provide both project files for download. Just the
.pts for now, without the images.

Also, did you use the exact same images, or did you pre-process them
with different programs? Could be the original images contain metadata
that help PTGui to position them, and some program removed those from
one version.

Hi,

Both computers (should) run exactly the same algorithm, I would be very
surprised if there is a consistent difference. The algorithm is not
affected by the CPU, the GPU or the amount of memory available.

However: generating control points involves some amount of randomness,
so the results will be slightly different each time. It's possible that
the algorithm got stuck in one case because it was on the edge of being
able or not being able to find control points.

If you run it a few times and consistently get different result, feel
free to make your images available so I can take a look.

As Erik says, make sure to run the same version and do File -> Reset
Default Project Settings to make sure the same settings are used.

Hi Erik and Support,

Thanks for your feedback.

I have tested four samples, and they had consistently different results; Macbook Pro was able to align the images, whereas Dell XPS failed to align correctly.

1. Dell XPS used 12.21 and Macbook used 11.32
2. I used the exact same images to stitch panorama on both laptops.
3. Including 4 sample .pts files & exported jpg files for your reference - the original images were way too large to post here. Please refer to the google drive link below.

Thanks!

One thing that I noticed was that when I align images on Dell XPS, some of the source images get rotated.

Could this be the reason?

XPS Source images: 1,2,3,5,7,8,9 was rotated

Macbook Pro: images did not rotate

The third test file did not rotate source images on both Macbook & Dell laptops, and the panorama results were similar.

On contrast, the fourth test file also did not rotate on both Macbook & Dell but the results were significantly different.

So it's not a mac vs Windows difference, but rather PTGui 12 failed to
align your images whereas PTGui 11 could align them. Right?

Could you make your source images available?

I took a look at DELL XPS_TEST2.pts and DELL XPS_TEST4.pts. With both
projects you have image 1 as anchor image (Optimizer tab). But in both
projects image 1 has yaw, pitch and roll values other than 0, which
means it's panned out of the center and rotated in some way. In both
projects, after I reset yaw, pitch and roll values of image 1 to 0
(Image Parameters tab) and optimized (F5) I got very much the same
alignment as in your macbook examples.

So the question is, why is image 1 rotated and panned in your v12
projects? When does it get rotated? Is it after you press Align Images
or at load?

Ah! I think I know what happened.

PTGui 12 pre-aligns the images based on the yaw/pitch/roll recorded by
DJI drones in the metadata. So that's why the panorama appears off-center.

To disable this:

Load your images
Press Advanced
Go to Project Settings
Uncheck "Position images automatcially using metadata from the camera's
orientation sensor" (at the bottom)
Then proceed with Align Images

Or, you can center the panorama after it has been aligned: in the
Panorama Editor press the Center Panorama button.

I finally got it figured out.
