Hello,

I shoot a large amount of panoramas for feature films using a Roundshot VR Drive. This method is becoming increasingly popular on movie sets. The VR Drive is great because it spits out a Papywizard file which I then import into PTGui. However, every time I import the papywiazard file, PTGui doesn't seem to be able to read the "roll" that is stated in the file.

This means I have to manually go in an change the roll for all images. Am I missing something? Is my papywizard file formatted incorrectly? I've attached screen shots to better illustrate. Thank you . notepad_2023-03-21_14-51-30.pngPTGui_2023-03-21_14-51-48.png

Hi Andrew,

This is on purpose; the capture robot usually doesn't know of the camera
is mounted in portrait or landscape, so the roll is often wrong.
Therefore PTGui ignores it.

You can quickly set it in several ways, the easiest is probably to load
all your images, then press the rotation arrow buttons in the Project
Assistant (before applying the papywizard file).

Kind regards,

Thanks for the reply. So my question is, where is the roll information coming from then? Is there anyway to import the roll information? Or is it only generated once you start to align images?

In my case, id like to provide our artists with a papywizard file that correctly positions all the images without them having to manually rotate each set. Most of the time these photo sets go to different artists and they do not know which way to correctly orient the camera. Trying to remove the trial and error as well as increase the speed for processing large sets of photos. I know my papywizard file has the correct orientation so its unfortunate to me that that information is not read.

Hi Andrew,

By default the roll is 0. The roll is unchanged when doing File ->
Import Papywizard. In Align Images, after generating control points, the
roll will be optimized and thus changed.

But why not give them a PTGui template instead of a papywizard file?
They can do File -> Apply Template

Thank you for the quick reply and the information. We found we get the best results when we select "Images are already roughly positioned. Only search for control points in overlapping areas". If we don't have that selected, in some cases it can drastically effect the position and orientation of the panorama, leading to more cleanup.

Also I'm trying to avoid using a template because in most cases, we send off these photo sets to different vendors which have their own template already that accounts for everything else.  I really just need to send them the positional data of all the images and right now I don't see a way of doing that without loosing one axis.

You can limit a template to applying just the positional data. In your
template, go to Project Settings, Template Behavior and uncheck
everything except Image Parameters.

I think this is pretty much equivalent to applying a papywizard file.
