Trying to render out a 240 image (JPEG) panorama, and PTGUI 12.13 hangs/stalls every time, at about 70-90% when using GPU render/stitch. Using CPU render everything works fine. But it takes way too long, even on a strong CPU. Sad not to be able to use your expensive hardware with PTGUI! :(

Tonemapping applied to the panorama. Output color space autmatic (same as source ProPhotoRGB)

System:
AMD Threadripper 2950X
128GB DDR4 memory
Windows 11 (KB5017383 - latest as of Sep 21st)
NVIDIA RTX 3090 24GB (DCH Drivers 517.40 - latest as of Sep 21st)
Plenty of available HD/NVME space..
Screenshot 2022-09-21 192812.jpg

Screenshot 2022-09-21 195115.jpg
Untitled-1.jpg

Screenshot of task manager made at current render-process, which has halted.
Minor changes to Memory (and CPU  (0-4), but render process is unable to finish.
GPU memory static.

Really frustrating. Anyone what can I do??

Other software installed and running as service:
Adobe Clouds services,Teams, Dell Display Manager, Riva Statistics tuner, Monitor profile switcher, iCue profiler v3, DisplayCal.

Tried disabled all of the above, nothing helps.

Best,
Ole

I think other people have solved this by installing the Nvidia Studio driver rather than the Game Ready driver.

Hi Ole,

As RoyReed says, please make sure you are using nvidia's Studio drivers,
the game drivers are known to cause issues.

Otherwise, could you try reducing the amount of video memory used by
PTGui? This shouldn't affect the stitching time too much and I'd like to
see if that's a factor. Try setting it to
Use at nost 4096 MB of video RAM memory.

Kind regards,

Hi,

I am indeed running the studio drivers v517.40.

Screenshot 2022-09-22 111419.jpg

Up unitil yesterday I was running standard drivers v472.84, same issues there.
Hence why I installed the new studio drivers.

Best,
Ole

Have you tried reducing the amount of GPU memory used by PTGui?

Nope, tried reducing video memory to max 4096MG, still hangs towards the end.

So frustrating! :(

Also, really frustrating that clicking cancel does not work. PTgui does not respond to cancel :(
I can see that the amount of memory (RAM) PTgui uses fluctuates, so there is somethine going on, but stitching stalls..
Only thing I can do is to force close program in task manager..

Got many other creative softwares, Topaz, DXO, Adobe, SGO Mistika, Kolor Autopano Giga/video, only program that hangs when utilizing GPU is PTgui.

Any more ideas?

Regards,
Ole

Hi Ole,

Does the problem happen with all projects? If not, could you try
preparing a (preferably small) project which triggers the problem and
send it to me? I would like to reproduce the problem.

I've just ran some tests using nvidia 517.40 studio driver, PTGui Pro
12.13 on Windows 11. One of them was a fairly large panorama (180 image
5 brackets hdr and tone mapping) but all ran without any issues.

Anyone running into this issue, if you could make your project available
for download, I would like to give it a try.

@Don: if the turning off GPU acceleration doesn't resolve the issue then
it's a different problem (which I would be happy to investigate)

Hi,

tried another one, similar size, it also causes PTgui to hang.

I have no problem providing you files, but surely this doesn't have to do with the stills/JPEGs.
It must be either my system or something with the PTgui-software/drivers? Or interfering software?

Still cannot think of what else on my system could be causing this.
If it was something else, as my RAM/RAID, then this should affect other software as well.

If I send you the files and you manage to render it out using GPU, then what?
It still would not help me figuring out what is causing this.

Is there a way to log within PTgui to detect what is causing the freeze?

Best,
Ole

Hi Ole,

When using GPU acceleration, PTGui sends many small jobs of OpenCL code
to the GPU driver. Each job takes a few milliseconds to complete. The
jobs themselves cannot be canceled, but if the cancel button is pressed,
PTGui waits for the last scheduled jobs to complete and then cancels the
stitching process.

From your description it seems that one of the jobs is hanging in the
GPU driver and never completes.

This could be a bug in the GPU driver. I don't know if it can be fixed
or worked around in PTGui, or perhaps it can be reduced to a
reproducible bug report for nvidia. But in order to do that I need some
way to reproduce the problem. So if you have a specific project that
triggers the problem I can try that. A small project would be ideal,
perhaps you can try stitching the downloadable samples at
https://ptgui.com/videotutorials.html ?

I could just buy a NVIDIA RTX 3090 24GB and try, but I'm afraid things
will just run fine when I try and it's a specific combination of factors.

Kind regards,

Joost Nieuwenhuijse

I tested all the demos, they stitch instantly with GPU on my system, no problems. But they are so small, I expected this.

My smaller panoramas stitch fine. It is when they get a little larger that problem with freeze happens with GPU stitch.

I can see if I can send you a larger panorama for you to check.

Where can I send it privately to you only?

Best,
Ole

@ Ole C. Salomonsen:

did you got some improvements with your RTX3090?
I have nearly same Hardware (TR2950x / 128 GB RAM, NVMe) and i am thinking about changing my graphics card from existing GTX 1070 to RTX 3090.
But reading your post, it seems RTX 3090 is not working properly with PTGui 12, right?

Thanks for answering/Sharing your experience with RTX 3090 and PTGui

Christian
