Hi, I hope this hardware question is OK.

I am looking for a light pano head for backpacking.  I use a Canon M6 (aps-c) and 8mm Samyang fisheye for creating 360º panos.  I am looking at the Bushman Gobi and the Nodal Ninja NN3 mk3.  I'm leaning towards the NN3 even though it is a bit heavier as I also do urban panos plus the NN3 allows adaptation to automations.  I'd appreciate any thoughts though.  Maybe there is something else out there.

Thanks for any advice.

I recently bought this panoramic head and I am more than happy with it: https://www.pocketpano.de/english/pocketpano-vario/
It is very light and small.
Im using it with a Sony Alpha 6400 and Samyang 8mm F2.8 Fisheye. Not sure if it will fit your camera setup.

Oliver

I am a big fan of the SLANT nodal point adapter:
I use it with the a notched rotating base from the same website:

The nodal point adapter is custom built for one or more camera/lens combinations and gives you a 360xalmost-180 panorama in a single row.  Because it has fixed positions for the given camera/lens combinations, it's super easy to use.

Unfortunately, I only know the above German-language source.

Thank you, that is a great looking product and it's good to hear that it works well for you.  I had not heard of it before and it seems almost perfect.

The Slant looks interesting but not sure how well it would work with my camera/lens.  I'll keep an eye out for more info.  Thank you.

Rick, If you want to see how it might work for you, you can do a test shoot using the camera hand held with the diagonal of the image frame vertical. Hang a key on a thread from an elastic band on the lens mount roughly at the entrance pupil position to act as a plumb line so you can take 8 shots around centred on a marker on the ground.  Simple and costs nothing.

I am using both NPAs - they follow a different strategy:

The PocketPANO Vario is a full-blown yet leight-weighted NPA which I use for a MFT PEN-F + Samyang 3.5/7.5mm combination (FF fisheye). This would be roughly equivalent to your APS-C + Samyang 8mm combi. Advantage: adaptable to other camera/lens combinations, small & easily fits in your backpack. I am working with it for 3 years now without problems. Needs 8 shots(+20 deg up) + nadir for my MFT system.

The slant system is dedicated to a specific camera/lens combination. I am using it with my PEN-F + LAOWA 4mm (210deg circ. fisheye). Can be operated with 4 shots + nadir or even 2 shots in slant. You should ask Erwin Hopf from PT4Pano if your combination makes sense with slant. He has many camera/lens combinations available and will manufacture this specific combi setup for you. Advantage: no NPP adjustment required - system works out of the box.

Thank you.  I have since found a bit more info on the slant method including another product from Novoflex.

It looks interesting and even if it did work for my 8mm lens as they claim, I am worried that I'm using too much of the edges of the frames and the lower quality there.

Anyway I have decided to buy the Nodal Ninja NN3 as I need one quickly.  The PocketPANO Vario looks perfect but right now they are charging more than 25% of the purchase price for shipping to NA which includes Canada, I assume.  The order page is not working well for me.     I'll probably own one in the future.

Thanks again for all the advice.

p.s.  This is the kind of imagery I want the pano head for.  This was hand held but too much work in software.

Klaus,

Thanks for pointing out that link to PT4Pano.. I'd never heard of them before.  They seem to make some very neat and compact pano solutions.  I'm looking for one that will speed up vehicle interior photography.  I'm currently using the Nodal Ninja 4, but it's a little cumbersome in a vehicle.

Can you recommend a hardware setup for this?  I've messaged PT4pano, but I had to rely on google translate, so I hope they understand what I'm asking for.  I'm not only looking for a compact rotator and head, but a compact and stable tripod solution.

I'm using the Sony A7iii with the Sammy 8mm.. but I would have no objection to going wider, as long as the images are sharp and minimal CA.  That Laowa 4mm looks interesting, but it seems setup for MFT only...

In his panorama blog (4/2014) Erwin Hopf describes a solution with a shaved 8mm Samyang (https://www.pt4pano.com/blog/2014/sony-a7-samyang-fisheye). This is based on a standard L-shaped NPA. If you want to use a slanted combination with a Sony A7III the currently best solution is the 2.8/12mm Samyang fisheye. This is described in the following blog https://www.pt4pano.com/blog/2019/slanted-stitchen-mit-ptgui-11. In this blog Erwin shows the stitching of the slanted material pretty much in detail. He recommends 8 shots with that combination. Very readable article. You should use the Google translator.

I guess you know that with a wider lens you not only get much lower
resolution but you also waste most of your sensor pixels. The 8mm
already uses little more than half of your pixels only.

Sorry, that should be the Sammy 12mm that I’m currently using.   I got an email from PT4pano mentioning the ‘shaved 8mm sammy’.

I might suggest the Fanotec R1 series. This is very small and light and they make a lens ring for your Samyang 8mm. Very light and compact with the R10 rotator.

Pair it with a Mecha C1 and get automation too!.
