Some questions about the Avid S6, S1 and the Avid Doc

Hi everyone.
Hope you are having a good start to the week. I emailed some of these questions to Slau about a month ago and he suggested that I email the list to get some more responses. I am planning to set up a ProTools system at home so I can work remotely.

I have some questions about using the Avid S6, the dock, and the S1 control surfaces. Have any of you used an Avid S6 before? How accessible is that? I have used the older C24, but not this board and wasn’t sure how accessible it is. If not, how accessible is the AvidS1 and the dock control surface? I know all of them use the EUCON protocol. I am very familiar with using the C24 board, but I have not used the Avid S1 or the Dock before.

I looked at the hardware layout descriptions in the PT access dropbox folder for both control surfaces and the guide for setting up EUCON so I can get familiar with it. Does the Dock have a scrub/shutle function for editing audio? I know it has a jog/shuttle wheel and I was hoping you could use that for editing. Also is an iPad required for using the Dock?

Hello,

While I haven’t had experience with an Avid S6 or Avid C24 surface, I do own four Avid S1 control surfaces and an Avid Dock that are installed in my home studio. Yes, the Avid Dock allows for audio scrubbing and editing. Currently, my setup includes 33 motorized faders: one for the Avid Dock, with the other 32 distributed among the four Avid S1 control surfaces. All these devices are networked through a Linksys switch. I have an iPad connected to my Avid Dock, mainly for personal experimentation. Unfortunately, the iPad OS application isn’t user-friendly for those who are blind or visually impaired. While the iPad adds several functionalities, the Avid Dock can function without it, offering automation, scrubbing, and other features tailored to your workflow.

Hi Steve. Thanks for your reply earlier this week. That’s great you can use the dock without an iPad and that the Avid S1 is accessible. I know you said the iOS version of the ProTools control app isn’t accessible. Is the desktop version? I’ve been reading a couple PDF guides for the Avid S1 and the guide for using EUCON control surfaces to get familiar with how they work. Navigating and performing functions is a little bit different, compared to when I used the C24 board. Also, what audio interface is accessible to use with the Avid S1 and the dock? I’ll be doing postproduction work doing editing and mixing in stereo in probably 5.1 surround.

Hey,

No worries at all. The Avid Control application isn’t accessible on the iPad. While I haven’t tried the desktop version, I suspect it might not be friendly to the blind or visually impaired. Regarding your audio interface query, any interface that’s compatible with your computer should suffice. I personally use both the Avid Carbon and the Avid MTRX audio interfaces. They’re on the pricier side, but their functionality and integration with Avid Pro Tools make them worthwhile for me.

For those in the group like Slau who might have 5.1 speaker setups, they could provide more insight on suitable audio interfaces. Although the two I’ve mentioned are options, there’s a wide variety available. If I recall correctly, the C 24 has built-in inputs, whereas the Avid S1 and Avid Dock lack XLR inputs. I could be wrong about the C 24 having XLR inputs though, don't quote me ha ha. Pay close attention to your audio interface specifications and your requirements for your speakers, this will allow you the best playback experience for your room.

Starting with the instruction manuals is always a good idea. However, if you encounter any challenges or have questions while using the devices, don’t hesitate to reach out either privately or here on the Google group.
