Hi guys:

I have this audio in a mix that the person on speaking was too close
to the mic. The level of audio in the mix is +1. I'm trying to figure
out what to do. Anyone has an idea? I'm reading online now, but in the
meantime, if you have a solution, I'd very much appreciate it. Thanks!

Best,

Dammie

I haven’t tried this, but Izotope Elements has a DeClip plugin. I believe it smooths out the hard clip sounds. If the track sounds okay despite the high peak, you could get away with the Pro Tools Trim plugin before EQ and such.

Thanks Mike! But I tried Declip and it didn't change anything. Someone
mentioned the trim to me, but I checked the plugin section in ProTools
and couldn't find it. Could you tell where exactly where it is in
ProTools? Thanks!

The trim plug-in is located under other within the plug-ins menu if I’m not mistaken.

If it's a sterio track you'll have to look under multi-mono then other and you should find trim.

Thanks guys for your 2cents. I found it. And now, I have another
question and it is this: do I apply the Trim before or after E Q?
Thanks again.

I would apply it before the EQ, as you want to work with the repaired signal.

Thanks Stefan! I get it now. It didn't occur to me that I was
repairing the audio. It makes a great deal of sense.

Any tips on the parameters? God bless!

If your audio is distorted, the Trim plug-in will not repair it. The Trim plug-in will simply lower the volume of the distorted sound and it will remain distorted. If, however, the audio is going over 0 dB FS because of internal processing and the original audio is not distorted, there's still a chance to salvage it. It all depends upon whether the original audio is clipped. Pre-fader metering will let you know whether the original clip has reached 0 dB.

Wow, Slau! fThat's absolutely true! I was about coming back to inform
the community that nothing seems to change. After applying trim, the
clip was a tiny bit reduced, as the person on the mic was almost
eating the mic. The level of the audio itself is +1, and no matter
what I do it remains the same. Here is where my biggest confusion is:
what would be the set threshold if I want to apply compression to it?
Thanks a lot guys! This medium has really been helpful and I'm so
thankful to belong in it.

Best,

Dammie

Dammie,
If you want to keep it under 0 dB, there are multiple ways of doing it. One simple way is to select the entire length of the timeline for that track in the Edit window and lower the level of the clips with clip Gain. If your clip gain is set to its default value, pressing Control+Shift+Down Arrow will bring the clip volume down by half a decibel for each press. So, to bring down the volume 2 decibels, press Control+Shift+Down Arrow 4 times.
Setting an appropriate threshold depends on the average levels of the audio in a track. It's impossible to say what the right threshold would be. Use your ears and study how compression works. I'm trying to help but you're asking questions that take more than an email to explain.
Good luck,
Slau

Hi Dammie,
If you can't hear it distorting just "clip gain" it down 5 Db or so and call it a day! :)
To clip gain your audio track down select the whole track and hit;
Control shift down arrow to decrees it or up arrow to increase it.
Bang your done
Clip gain increments default to half of a Db so if you want it down 5 DB hold control shift then hit down arrow ten times to lower the track by 5 Db.
