Hi guys. i don’t think this is possible. but here goes. I am doing radio production in PT. i’m dealing with long files. and I’m wondering if there is any way of speeding up playback in protools wile playing a file. I probably only want to speed it up maybe 15 or 20 percent. Is there a stop plug or any way of doing this. I do have the waves sound shifter. but this is only possible to do this in this plug through audio sweet. i would need it to be non destructive editing so as to bypass when not needed. Just thought i’d put it out there.

Hi Steve,
If you're only dealing with playback of stereo audio (or two mono tracks) you can use Shuttle mode. Normally, there are fixed increments of shuttle speed. I've often seen a "Custom Shuttle Lock Speed" option in the Preference dialog but that might be a Pro Tools Ultimate-only feature but worth taking a look. HTH,
Slau

Hi Steve,
Can't you just hit "control with one of the num pad #s?
For instance;
hold control num pad 6 to speed up just a bit.
remember num pad "1" is extreme slow.
then moving up 2 3 then 4 then 5 which is normal speed shuttle.
Then moving up to num pad 6 faster then 7 then 8 then 9 which is extreme fast!

Hi Steve,
I think the custom shuttle speed might be Ultimate only but vanilla Pro Tools certainly has a shuttle option with the Control modifier plus the numbers row. You might not be able to customize, per se, but with 5 being normal speed, 6 will give you double speed which might work for you. HTH,

hi Slau and chuck ok I’ve tried this but I can’t seem to get any joy out of it. I hold control and hit num pad 1 through 6 or 7 and the speed is not changing. playback just continues as normal. is there something i’m doing wrong. this would probably do it if I can get it working

Hi Steve,
I don't have a native system on which to test this. It does work for me. Not sure why it wouldn't work for you. It's definitely a feature. I assume you're using Transport mode for the num pad, yes?

Oh, hang on, I just realized from your message that it appears that you're engaging the transport and then pressing the keyboard shortcut. You don't start playback. You simply press Control plus the number while the transport is not rolling. LMK if that helps,

yes that worked. I thought i tried this but obviously not. Thanks for this. it will help. The one thing I can’t understand is why they have given us all these lovely slower settings num pad 1 through 4, and no setting for speeding up playback gradually in the same way as the slower settings. Seems apsolutely crazy and makes this mode difficult to use for what i need it for. But I guess if i want more control, I can always upgrade to HD. what is the price difference, i can google this anyway.

Pro Tools Ultimate is something crazy at the outset and then $399 per year as a subscription. From time to time, of course, Avid offers upgrade deals. Perhaps from a regular subscription, it's something like $600 for the first year then the $399 thereafter. Otherwise, perpetual licenses are insanely priced.
bTW, your num pad is in Transport mode (or layout, if you will) by default but there's also a classic mode for really old-school users.
Cheers,
Slau

You should be able to fast forward quicker by pressing control +6 , 7, 8, or 9 on the numeric keypad.
