No. Do not update to the latest version of ProTools if you are on Sonoma. The combination is a very bad one for voiceover, and makes pro tools almost completely unusable

I guess, we are just never going to see a single day in our lives when ProTools, voiceover, and Sonoma will be a reality. Let's face it. We're already into the month of March, and that means we only have three months until the next major operating system for the Mac is released, whatever it will be outside of Sonoma. this is pretty much exactly why I have switched to my primary daw being reaper. I'm sorry to say it, but I have almost completely lost respect for avid at this point.

I understand the argument that people like Slau have made about them having to get things right, and how professional industries can't afford to have things breaking in a production environment, but, there comes a point where this becomes absolutely ridiculous! They have had more than ample amount of time over this last year, nearly year and a half to get things working. reaper pretty much worked almost within three months after Sonoma was released. I understand it might not be industry-standard, but, I've been able to do pretty much anything and everything in reaper that I ever would've done and pro tools.

this might piss some people off me making this rant here on list, but I call it for what it is. And what it is, is, ridiculous! take it or leave it, you can agree with my assessment, or you can decide to disagree, but either way, I'm not changing my view on this.

Chris.

Hello Chris,
About your message: in holland we say it's somewhat overheated!
And it is not correct. Apple releases a next update to their os about oktobedr and Sonoma is released in oktober 2023.
So thats's not one and a half year old.
And Avid is not the only audio software builder that takes more time to test the software. E.g. Korg, roland etc are still working on updates for Sonoma en Apple silicon.
So Chris cool down a bit.
Tom.

OK, look. My message very well may have been overheated, that's a fair assessment, and I respect your thoughts. that however said, let me clarify something.

I didn't mean to imply that the next major OS would be released in 3 months. What I meant was, it would be announced then. WWDC is usually when they announce new major OS's now with a pattern of once a year every June when the conference is held.

I didn't mean that it was necessarily released then in the actual month of June. You're correct that normally officially it would be around October.

Anyway, fair enough about your opinion. I happen still to disagree with it on some small level, but you're right, I could have been more civil in how I presented my message earlier. I'll give you that. I apologize.

Chris.

I myself lost respect with avid, years ago. Part of it beeing this very thing, updates. Its beyond ridiculous, and for other reasons. Ive switched to reaper as my first daw and have never looked back. For those who like and use pro tools, more power to you, but I just couldn't deal with the, we cant update os just because one program possible messing up, and the price gouging, not a company I can support.

Jose Ignacio

Chris, have found that as well. I'd even go as far as saying that reaper has allowed me to do way more than I could do in pro tools, I.e, way more pluggins are fully accessible inside the daw itself, control surface seems to be a hell of a lot better even though you need to tweek things a bit when setting up stuff for the first time... But its all worth it, imo. I'm not bashing avid or anyone who use pro tools, but as Chris put it, this got to a point where this is beyond ridiculous, and where one switches do to problems like these.

Jose Ignacio

Just for the record, I wasn't bashing them either... At least, not purposely. PT is a really awesome DAW, and I absolutely do still use it a fair amount, and I don't think I'll ever totally ditch it, if I can help it, but yeah... Again as I said the other day, maybe my message on list was really more harsh than necessary in tone, but this is something I'm incredibly passionate about.

Why are you still on this list while you don't want to use pro tools for update reasons?
As a computer teacher for blind people i always give my clients the advise to wait with updating until all works finhe.

Tom.
