Happy New Year All!
To celebrate the ringing in of another year, Japan Review is delighted to announce the publication of its latest volume.
Volume 39 of Japan Review features a Special Section on Domain Shinto in Tokugawa Japan, consisting of an introduction and four articles, together with a further four research articles, a research note, a review essay, and reviews for 14 recently-published books.
The full volume is available through J-Stage here:

in the meantime, I was able to have a look at the cover. While it is only indirectly related to our topic (it must be an idealized version of Dazaifu Tenmangu), I like it very much and thank you and whoever else was involved for the splendid design. Can you tell us, when the hard copies will arrive?

Following up to note (with apologies to Bernard Scheid) that we usually hold back misaddressed messages but missed this one.
To pull back the curtain on what happens behind PMJS: every message we receive requires approval and our moderators, who are located in different time zones, do our best to check and approve swiftly. The online interface does not make it especially easy to do this on a small screen and occasionally we hit two messages at once. Or, life gets in the way and messages may sometimes build up.

Apologies seem unnecessary in this case. Sometimes mistakes are a good thing. In this case, I hadn’t paid close attention to journal when its publication was announced, but Prof. Scheid’s misaddressed message led me to take a second look. I hadn’t noticed the cover, which is indeed very attractive. I would have liked to see a larger version of the image, but, if there is one on the website, I couldn’t find it. It does seem to show Dazaifu Tenmangu. Perhaps someone could tell us its source? Also, I took a second look at the articles and realized I should read them. So, thank you Prof. Scheid for your helpful mistake.

It is a book illustration by Arai Yoshimune in one of these wonderful editions of Japanese literature for a Western audience published by Hasegawa Takejirō in later Meiji, in this case the play Terakoya (featuring Michizane) in a French translation by the German scholar Karl Florenz.
