I am a newbie when it comes to Linux but I successfully installed Raspberry Pi OS (full 32 bit desktop version - Bullseye Debian) with no problems and then followed the commands exactly for the first steps in  installing the PiDP 11 software

sudo mkdir /opt/pidp11
cd /opt/pidp11
sudo wget http://pidp.net/pidp11/pidp11.tar.gz
sudo gzip -d pidp11.tar.gz

sudo tar -xvf pidp11.tar
sudo /opt/pidp11/install/install.sh

All went well till the last line when it failed with "command not found".  I verified that install.sh was there and I even ensured it was executable as a possible problem by doing a chmod +x on the file.

But since the tar file download and expanded without error I am kinda at a loss with  this command not found error.

Did I do something wrong?

Since install.sh is a shell script. What is the first line in the
script, and is the binary referred to there existing on your system?

First line of the install.sh script is
PATH=/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin

Those directories exist

Next line is
apt - get update

followed by several apt - get install commands

I assume these files and the install process operating on them must be pretty solid by this time.

Did you type ./install.sh ? Or only install.sh

Jeesh I should read twice and post zero. Sorry I can’t see why the quoted sequence of commands would not work.

What??? Really? If so, then I understand why it fails.

The first line of a shellscript should usually be something like:

#!/bin/sh

The "#!" part is both marking it as a comment, and a magic cookie to
exec telling that the rest of the line is the path to the binary that
should be run, which will understand this file and run it.

Unpacking the tarball the first lines of the file are:
#1/bin/sh. <---- This looks a typo in the original source file, this should most likely be #!/bin/sh
#
#
# install script for PiDP-11
# v0.20180511
#
PATH=/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin

Yeah, that looks like the kind of brokenness that would then result in
the mentioned error.

Thanks for the help so far.

I went back and I downloaded the pidp11.tar.gz file again.  Expanded the tar file and examined the shell file.  Same error,
so I edited it as recommended by ervb and ran it again.  Same error (see screen shot).  Can I run this shell in a verbose mode so we can see where it croaks?

But unless I am doing something really dumb is there a possibility that the tar file I am getting has problems?

Hmm. You might have sudo setup not allowing you to run random commands...
(That is what it actually looks like.)

You could try:

sudo sh /opt/pidp11/install/install.sh

in case sudo is setup to allow you to run sh.

Change the line #!/bin/sh to #!/bin/sh -x -e -v
This will give you debugging output and the script will stop at the first error.

Thanks for all the responses.

I was finally successful in getting the install script to run.

Two things needed to change.

1) I had to correct an error in the first line of the install script  from #1/bin/sh to #!/bin/sh

2) I got the shell script to execute by using Johnny's suggestion (thank you)  to invoke with this modified command which added the
sh command as part of the full command invocation

     sudo sh /opt/pidp11/install/install.sh

So, I have made a lot of progress ... however,  the version of the shell script that was downloaded as part of the pidp11 package has a fatal error so how do I get this fixed for others coming after me?  Its Version  V0.20180511, but with no date.  Do the folks who manage this software follow this forum?

Secondly, I needed to add sh explicitly as part of the command shown in the instructions for executing the shell script.  Was that my problem with my Pi OS install?  And if not, was there something that I should have been told to do to ensure that my account was set up properly so that the install command included in the instructions would work?

I only ask so as to improve instructions and help others avoid the traps that I ran into.

Again, thanks for all the responses, it was much appreciated.  And special kudos to Johnny as your help in particular helped me dig out of the hole I was in.

-peter

PS  I have attached an image of the first page of the original install shell script from the pidp11 software package that shows the error in line 1.
