One way:
(A) exit to simh and then quit
(B) locate the server11 program and kill it

Is there an all-in-one way?

Or do we now have a fancy systemctl-based approach?

TIA,
Neil

Neil,

The intended way: there's a  'hidden' switch combination of depressing the HALT switch and pushing the Address knob. This will effectively issue the equivalent of a "sudo shutdown -h now" command. You should wait 15 seconds more before cutting power. Note that you can optionally connect the key switch to take over this function, see here.

Kind regards,

Oscar.

Err ... I just want the PiDP-11-specific “suite“ (“system” was a poor choice of word - “application system,” perhaps) shut down, but Linux stll running.

Ah - CTRL-E, exit would be what I do.

Does that shut down the blinkenlight server as well? I need that shut down too.

Best practice for that would be to first shut down any PDP-11 operating system running in the emulator.  For example, for RSX-11M-PLUS or RSTS/E, you'd login as [1,2] then RUN $SHUTUP.  After the PDP-11 OS has finished shutting down, type a Control-E to get to the SIMH prompt, then type EXIT (or exit) at which point you should be back at a Linux shell prompt.

Please forgive me for being pedantic ...

As I understand it, there are TWO progams in the suite - the Blinkenbone version of simh (as client); and the PiDP-11 implementation of a Blinkenbone “blinkenlights” server. The Blinkenbone architecture seems to admit a larger array of components for various purposes, but I think Oscar has kept it mercifully simple (although the term ”realcons” has popped up in discussions, and I’m not sure if that is something else again, or just a machine-specific part of the client).

I want to shut down BOTH programs, at once preferably, and I’m asking if there is a mechanism for that.

Maybe a little more ordered shutdown is appropriate? :-)
Under RSX, "RUN SHUTUP" assuming SHUTUP has been installed, which it
usually is, otherwise "RUN $SHUTUP". Once back at the simh prompt, just
exit.

It's probably [1,54] under RSX, but any privileged account is fine.
And simh will already give the prompt when the OS have completed
shutting down, at least from RSX, so no need for ^E.

Ok, so I killed off simh (^E, exit) and the server11 process disappeared as well. Presumably the client sends a shutdown request to the server on its way out..
