Hi, I am attempting to pipe a text file to my printer. But RSX11m+ cannot see it.

I have networking working on both the standard rsx11mp and rsx11bq versions of SimH of the PiDP11. I can ping google.com and my router at 192.168.0.1 and get nice returns from both. 60 ms from google and 20 ms from the router.

However I get a destination unreachable error if I attempt to ping my RPi on 192.168.0.185,  my printer on 192.168.0.182, or my other printer on 192.168.0.18, or my iPhone.

All of these all ping OK from the Raspberry Pi terminal window (hosting my PiDP-11), Net Analyzer on my phone, or Windows.

;attach xu eth0 did not work, so I have
att xu nat:gateway=192.168.0.1,dns=192.168.0.1,network=192.168.0.44 in the boot.ini file  instead.

This is not using the PiDP-11, right? Because the whole build-in NAT
isn't in there, as far as I know.

Anyway, you didn't fully appreciate what NAT is, or how to work with that.

So basically, as you are playing with NAT, your PDP-11 should not have
an IP address in the same network as the rest of your internal network.
It should have a network of its own.

See the 0readme_ethernet.txt file about this. But just try the suggested
10.0.2.15/24 as your PDP-11, 10.0.2.2 would be the gateway, and 10.0.2.3
for DNS. simh also does respond to DHCP if you do things this way, so
you might not need to configure anything inside the PDP-11 yourself (if
it uses DHCP).

To make a couple of more comments:

If you want to reach the PDP-11 from the outside, using telnet or ftp, a
line like:

attach xu nat:tcp=21:10.0.2.15:21,tcp=23:10.0.2.15:23

would set it up so that if you telnet to the RPi host, it will be
forwarded to the PDP-11. Same thing with ftp. That line basically
creates the simulated ethernet interface on a simulated ethernet
segment, and have simh act as a NAT router to your normal in house
network. And it will listen for incoming connections on port 21 and 23,
and forward such connections to 10.0.2.15 on port 21 and 23
respectively. (You can of course add more ports you want forwarded in
the same way...)

From the PDP-11 you should not have any problems connecting to whatever
you have on your local network.

Maybe he is running into the same problem I did when trying to get my
SimH PiDP on HECnet. I run Johnny's rsx11bq system. When using
the recent install script, either the original from GitHub, or Terri's updated
version, "att xu eth0" ís not working due to some missing Linux Capabilities
to allow SimH full access to the Linux-controlled Ethernet controller. When
invoking pdp11control as root (sudo pdp11control start 2024), then
everything works just perfect, kind-of confirming the access privilege
problem. The only side effect is that you need to start the pdp11
terminal also as susdo pdp11. Also, you cannot do this under Terri's
install unless you disable the check for running as root.

I started experimenting with additional capabilities, but are a bit under
time constraint right now. However, I did not observe any other side effects
besides the above mentioned need for sudo. Maybe this helps. I will
continue to find the working combination of Capability settings.

To use the Pi's Ethernet adapter in promiscuous mode when not running as root, try

sudo setcap cap_net_raw,cap_net_admin=+ep client11

Fair point. Andrew mentioned that directly attaching to eth0 didn't
work, which possibly is just a question of running as root, or playing
around with capabilities.

However, if he uses NAT, then no root access is required, and in some
ways it's a potentially very nice solution. It will work right over
WiFi, no messing around with bridge interfaces and the like,
communication with the host system also works, and so on.
Drawbacks are that you only have access to the PDP-11 at the specific
ports you list, DECnet does not work (well, you can still do DECnet over
IP), and even with IP you are limited to just UDP and TCP communication.
Things like ICMP might be a problem. Also, any protocol that relies on
multicasts will also not work as you might hope.

Thanks everyone. Johnny is correct I don't know how NAT works. I borrowed the line from an old forum post and popped it into the boot.ini file when  attach xu eth0  failed. I guess that is a problem with root privileges. But, I don't know how to fix that either. The whole PiDP-11 system is setup as pi, not root.

I tried Manfred's approach of starting RSX11m+ with sudo pdp11control start 2024 and  sudo ~/pdp.sh.  That works well. It makes the original attach xu eth0 line work, I can ping my printer and other things on my network. I can still ping google.com.  This seems to be a good short term solution. The long term solution would be to stop using the NAT line and make the attach xu eth0 work without having to use sudo.

As Johnny says NAT only enables one IP address, which is my router. So I can access the outside world, like pinging google.com, but I cannot access any IP address on my LAN except the router.  Telnet works fine both in and out on port 10001 or 4000 on the other operating systems. There is an enable dz section in the boot.ini file. My NAT command did originally have the Telnet command, but it was overwritten by the later dz command and Telnet didn't work on port 23. so I removed it from the NAT line. I wonder if I can add another address to the NAT line specifically for my printer on 192.168.0.182.

I tried John B suggestion. but I got an error 'Failed to set capabilities on file 'setcap': No such file or directory' I probably have to change something in the command line.

Anyway thanks for taking the time to look at this for me!

cheers

Yes. Basically, accessing eth0 is not allowed by any random program,
since it's a potential security risk.
The easy way to solve that is to run as root. However, some people
consider that to be a security risk, and there are some ways to make
programs/users access eth0 without being root. Personally, I do not
consider that a security problem that is worth loosing any sleep over,
but to each his own.

Yes. Doing that makes it all work as you would expect, and is honestly
the most straight forward way of getting things running.

With NAT, you should *not* point at your router. You should basically
copy the exact line I gave you. NAT means that you have a different
network for the PDP-11, and any traffic *anywhere* needs to pass through
the router inside simh, which then makes it possible to connect to any
machine on your network.

By pointing the NAT at your router and give an address that is on your
network really means that your PDP-11 will not be able to connect to
anything on your local network.

The telnet server inside simh is outside the scope of all this, and is
basically just always on the host's IP address.

What we're talking about here is any service running on the actual
PDP-11, which can have a telnet server as well (along with numerous
other services).

And I don't know if this matters but, I had a problem with SimH
mapping the xu device into RSX. I even mailed Johnny with
information and he did not have an answer - The problem
turned out to be SimH appears to be sensitive to the order
in which one attaches network/terminal devices. Make sure that
you enable and attach the xu device before any terminal devices.

That sounds strange, but maybe simh have some funny business around the
whole thing.

Maybe you are explicitly setting CSRs and/or interrupt vectors? As soon
as you touch that, simh turns off it's automagic stuff, so from that
point of view, in which order you are doing things might matter a lot.

Hi,

Johnny,

I sent you stuff back in March of last year. Seems like just
swapping the terminal and network setup portions of the
SimH ini file cured the problem. and yes the csr is being set
for the xu as well as the csr and vector for the dz. Sim H
never complained, but rsx wasn't able to open the device.

Just as a general guideline, I've been happiest when running TCP/IP-capable things under simh, when I have:

1) converted my ethernet interface to a bridge interface
2) defined a bunch of tap devices, owned-and-writeable by my emulator user
3) given each simh instance with a TCP/IP interface its own tap device

The stuff I do to make this easier can be found at https://github.com/athornton/brnet-nmcli and it might be useful to other people.

Tim. It's not too complicated. RSX have some expectation of what the CSR
and interrupt vector address should be. If simh sets something else,
then things don't work.
Either correct on the simh side, or the RSX side, and you would be all
good. Software just have to match the "hardware" (simh in this case).
There is nothing automatic in RSX here. It just goes on what have been
defined previously.

And as mentioned - simh initially tries to automagically set correct
values for this, but as soon as you specify anything youself, simh stops
doing that. So if you relied on simh doing parts of the DEUNA/DELUA
setup for you, and you give specific information for terminal
interfaces, then if the terminal interface setup comes first, then the
DEUNA/DELUA setup no longer gets the automagic treatment.

It's sortof addressing a different problem, but it's a good point, and a
recommendation that solves a couple of other problems people often have.

I understand. But, no matter whether I set the csrs or not, I found that I had to set and
attach the xu device first in SimH for it to be opened in rsx. After that, it worked fine.
It's good to know about the behavior of SimH!!

I haven't played with it for a number of months so nothing has been updated
and the behavior might have changed.

Thanks,

Tim Boan

Well, I've certainly done the ethernet in all kind of places without
problems, so I think there is something specific you did which caused
the trouble.

But it's not that important. As long as you got things working we can
all be happy.

Did a check just now. My "normal" 2.11BSD as well as the system I create
my RSX distribution on simh instances, which I've been using for more
than 10 years, does the ethernet as the absolutely last line of the .ini
files. Have always worked.
And I do have a DZ11 set up as well, which is done before the ethernet.

Not to beat a dead horse, but this happens with Windows vs BSD.
Strangely, that might have something to do with it. An interesting
anomaly though.

Hmm. I've never used Windows, so I can't say if that could have any
effect. But it does seem strange if it did. This is, after all, just
code inside simh itself.
