When my P26 was too far gone for a second refit, I stripped some of her parts.

I had replaced my aluminum shafted rudder with a new one with a stainless steel shaft. The s/s shafted rudder is in East Hampton, NY in a container at my old boatyard. I would let it go for a song...

I also have spreaders and their sockets and a set of stanchions and bases in great condition.

The aluminum rudder shaft had corroded where it rested against the lower bushing due to anaerobic corrosion and one day on Gardiner's Bay, it just fell off. Luckily, I could steer my way home using the outboard.

Maybe someone with an old aluminum shaft rudder might want to replace theirs. I hate to see it go to waste.

George,

We are refitting our P26 right now at Oak Harbor Marina on the Chesapeake. She was donated to our Sea Scout unit several years ago with a missing stanchion, bow sprit, and several other components. Please let me know how we might work together to empty that storage locker and secure safe sailing for our youth.

Thank you in advance,

Ahoy Skipper Allen,

It would be cheaper for you to salvage a single stanchion.

My boatyard in East Hampton was really a graveyard for old boats. My
P26 would have cost me north of 15K to renovate. New sails, new
antiskid decking, new paint job, the cockpit sole was soggy. I stripped
the winches, stanchions and other items, then she was crushed by a
front loader. That depressed me for quite a while.

I can't give away the stainless steel rudder, it's in great shape and I
paid $1000 for it in 1995. It's been in dry storage for 15 years and I
don't want to break up the set of stanchions and bases, there are six.

I am an ex-Boy Scout and Sea Scout and would love to help your troop
out, but I am retired, living on a small fixed income and need the
revenue.

All the best to you and your Scouts,

George

Here is a photo of some of the items I salvaged.

I also have the spreaders.

All these items are in Germany however.

Thanks Tim,

I let it go to a woman from Boston for $800 less than half of a new one
and mine was in perfect shape with the stainless steel shaft.

FYI - The P30 and P26 rudders are not the same.  They have the same general configuration, same bushings, same shaft diameter, but I don't know if the length is the same - probably not.  The P30 has more area and more weight.  The P26 had an aluminum shaft, the 30 started with aluminum and changed to SS early with a recall of the aluminum.   You might be able to fit a P30 rudder on a P26 but it will be over-sized.  I expect you can't swap the other way around.
