OxCal not doing MCMC

I’m having trouble getting OxCal to do MCMC to calculate delta_R values. With this simple model OxCal doesn’t calculate any posteriors:

 

Plot()

{

  Curve("Terrestrial","intcal20.14c");

  R_Date("A",1172,34);

  Curve("Marine","marine20.14c");

  Delta_R("LocalMarine",U(-1000,1000));

  R_Date("=A",1642,43);

};

 

If I add a dummy sequence, or require an MCMC sample, then I get posterior values:

I don’t understand why the first model doesn’t generate a posterior, or how to get it to do so without adding redundant code.

Yes - that is a bug it should run MCMC for this. To force it to I suggest adding:

MCMC_Sample();

to the code - this is at least clear what it is for and will work. I will try to fix this in a later version.

I have also run into a problem with OxCal 4.4 not doing MCMC when using Save As.

If I make modifications to an existing file and save, the file will run fine. However, if I use Save As to rename the file and run, I get the error “404 Not Found” and have to close the window. When I try to run the file again, it initializes then immediately quits without doing MCMC. If I try to run the file a third time, it runs fine. 

Anytime I use the Save As, I have to go through the three step process, which is doable but rather cumbersome.

Thanks - I cannot reproduce that error on the server or downloaded version. Can you give a bit more detail:

- is that on the server or the downloaded version
- which browser are you using
- if downloaded what kind of computer

Perhaps also the exact sequence of steps such as:

- open file xxx.oxal
- do [File > Save as] - give new name
- do [File > Run]

this seems to be working for me.

Dear Christopher,

I am running the downloaded version 4.4.2 on a mac. I use FireFox for my browser.

Sequence of steps:

1. Open existing file xxx.oxcal

2. Make some kind of modification, e.g., mark a date as an outlier

3. [File > Save as ] xxxv1.oxcal

4. [File > Run] get error "404 Not Found"

5. Close window

6. Reopen file xxxv1.oxcal

7. [File > Run] the run box appears with initializing then immediately quits

8. Close window

9. Reopen file xxxv1.oxcal - [File > Run]  the file runs normally

The problem first appeared when I updated from 4.4.1 to 4.4.2. Please let me know if you need any additional information.

Ok - is the interface build 130 (which is the latest)? If not it may be worth redownloading the program again: there were a number of corrections to the GUI interface for the downloaded version very soon after release.

I have tested the latest download release on a Mac using the latest Firefox and it does not seem to be doing this for me.
