Hi Srivats

My company will use Ostinato to perform network storm tests on small local LANs.

There are three different scenarios that we would like to set up:

  1. Unicast Storm
  2. Multicast Storm
  3. Broadcast Storm.

We have already accomplished to create a Unicast storm by sending ICMP packages with Echo Request to a controller. However, we have still not managed to create a broadcast storm or multicast storm. For a broadcast storm we tried to send UDP-packages to IP-address 255.255.255.255 and MAC-address FF:FF:FF:FF:FF:FF. However, our network seemed to be untouched even though broadcast storm protection on the switch were turned off.

Lastly, I wonder how we should set up our multicast. How do we choose MAC address for multicast, and how do we choose IP-address for multicast? The Ip addresses on the LAN only differ by the last byte.

I would really appreciate to hear from you. Thank you in advance.

Best Regards,

Morten R. Hestdal

Morten,

For broadcast storm, make sure your source mac and IP address are set to a valid value and are not 0. It may also be possible that the amount of broadcast traffic generated by Ostinato is not enough to generate a storm. If you are using the Windows version of Ostinato, use the Linux version instead as the max traffic generated by the Windows version is much lower than the Linux version due to OS limitations.

Regarding multicast data traffic use a destination IP address in the range 224.0.0.1 to 239.255.255.255 and set the Destination Mac address mode to "Resolve" - Ostinato will automatically populate the correct destination Mac address.

You can also use the UDP multicast example stream accompanying the bundle downloads.

HTH,
Srivats (Author, Ostinato)

Morten,

Just following up to see if you were able to create the broadcast and multicast storms?

Hi Srivats.

Thank you for following up! I purchased the Linux-version instead, and I was able to create the multicast and broadcast storms. The load of the switch are increased, (close to 100%), but the devices connected to the switch does not really fail. As I read up on multicast, I’m not even sure if any of my devices listens to any multicast groups, so perhaps this is a test we do not need to perform. As for the broadcast, I guess we have to find some way to trigger some processing in the devices instead of just sending empty UDP-packets.

Best Regards,

Morten R. Hestdal

Hmm,
sending from one endpoint to broadcast/multicast addresss is not going
to create a storm, just a high load.
To create a storm you need a switch replicating the traffic (amplifying
it) and just a seed.

Try placing a patch cord between to ports and disabling STP. Be carefull
not to burn the switch :)

Hi Carlos.

Thank you for answering. Looping the network switch did create a storm 😊
