migration problem

I migrated from a mobile with my osmand data on an "external" memory to a newer one without. first everything was ok - but it is not. whenever I now start osmand it askes me to "migrate a shared memory", to copy all my data into a new folder.

I shall find the folder "osmand" and open it. but upon clicking "continue" and seing a filemanager it says "this folder cannot be used" and asks to create a new one. so I create one (to make things easy as top-level). I click on "use this folder" and give osmand permission to access it. of course osmand does not find any data in this newly created folder and it leads me to the start. I am stuck and cannot use osmand after it had worked fine on the first day of installation and had all my previous settings. can you help me?

- for android 10 and later
- for internal memory or external sd card

backup steps
1. from the app we have, we must backup to a file the app settings and the user saved files (if we have). I don't suggest the backup of map files - those are very large (see step 2).
2. we copy the main app working folder ( net.osmand.plus). Here are all the maps (large files)
with those 2 steps, we can reinstall the user app data after .... 1. device hard reser, 2. buy new smartphone, 3. device damage, 4. clone/backup device, .... etc

restore steps
with the help of a file manager
the path of memory location  ......next we have this name   /android/data/    here we place the app folder
one example for internal memory location >>>>>>>  /storage/emulated/0/android/data/net.osmand.plus

after a clean / new install from playstore, we visit into android apps settings for the osmand settings. Then we set permisions for 1. storage 2. location
then we run for first time the app

last step
- restore the user settings and saved file
- maybe we have to visit the internal app settings > osmand settings > data storage folder
to set the new user location data (if we have issues)
------------------

into my last device (5 years) and android 10 (no root), there is no sd card slot. I do only those steps.....
- install app from playstore
- visit android settings > and set osmand app permisions for 1. storage 2. location
- copy from usb otg memory the folder /net.osmand.plus (6.3GB map files) at smartphone location >  /android/data/
- run the app for first time with no working folder issue
- restore user settings

this is not appropriate for me. the old phone has been reset. the new one had started well WITH my old settings through google-transfer phone to phone. AFTER using it once with all my old settings (without maps) found osmand now askes and does not display my well-constructed old profiles BUT the stored locations.

how can I get osmand refind the old settings it already had found before? how can I get rid of the above described circus?

if you don't have the knowledge to understand what  i wrote to help you, you can email osmand help desk. luckily now you have the experience not to lose your data again, after a hard reset.

Maybe you hit https://github.com/osmandapp/OsmAnd/discussions/15348 ?

Over the years I've seen too many quirks Android users and developers had to do to to overcome Android changing policys about accessing files and directories.
I'd suggest:
First try to identify/recover your data, with a file maneger explore all the directories where osmand could have writed it. Also check possible online backups
If you find it, make a copy.

To avoid the "migrate" message I'd suggest the workaround posted in Nov 22, 2022 in the bug report.

Best luck
Pere

thank you, pere! I posted my problem on github, I'm not the only one with it. do you think my reset data are still available on the sd-card? but also on the new phone neither its files-app nor my pc shows ALL data, even though "files" hides more or less everything (what is the use of such app then?). also via PC my downloaded maps are nowhere to be found.

That depends on how did you reset the old phone,
I'd extract the sdcard. put it in an adapter and try to mount it on a computer, if the old data is there, then you are lucky.
If the data isn't there, you could try with some program to undelete/recover the old contents of the sdcard, assuming their place has not still been overwrited by new stuff.
In Linux I'd use testdisk, no idea what could be used in windows but there must be programs to do it.
Also consider the effort needed to recover old data vs the effort to re-create it, at some point one will weight more than the other.

Best luck
Pere

thank you! but what I really would like to understand is why neither files-app nor desktop shows ALL data on my new phone, i.e. I could not find the maps osmand downloaded and which I use. as I have already used my old profiles on the new phone also these should still be somewhere!

I took out the sd-card from the old one but only reseted files from the standard google-apps there, mostly empty - as it should be.

If I am not wrong, summarized, one point of the Android security police currently is no app should see internal data from any other app.
Another point is no app should be able to write outside some defined directories

I am not so sure about this, just speculating, if when you imported your data the storage directory for osmand was pointed to somewhere it could not write, then it is possible it could have not wrote
your data.

Ouch!
If you have not used it, filling it with stuff, chances are that an "undeleter" program could recover something from it, but of course no warranties

I did not migrate the maps, just all the rest. so if I am not allowed to see map data, then why can I find my photos, music etc.? do you find your osmand-maps? your profiles?

my old profiles only disappeared on the new phone, where I did already use them, after osmand started to bother me with needing a storage place, which I never succeeded to offer to its satisfaction ...

I hate it when my machines do what THEY want.

As I understand it, Google/Android have created special rules for these types of file and apps that use them. They haven't seen fit/ don't care that they're breaking other workflows in the name of heightened security. Osmand has to obey this to be listed in the play store. No, I can't currently see any of my osmand data. I can't browse Android/data or Android/obb, even with ghost commander.

Others have had success pointing Osmand to create it's directory within Android/media, while others say they have performance issues with this setup (to do with how the map data gets read).

There are many relevant issues on GitHub but here are a few that may help/inform.

Hope that helps

Tom
